Here in the bookshop today we had a visit from immigration control, apparently to see if we were letting out parts of the building to house illegal immigrants. They are apparently visiting all the shops and asking who lives in the flats above them, just telling them that we lived in the flat satisfied them, however after they went it did occur to me that perhaps not the people with flats full of illegal immigrants would admit to it.
It says on the back of the photo, Driver C Crow nigger mistral A Kirby 1920, I believe the location to be Minster as it’s part of a set of a Ramsgate charabanc operators pictures, that are going into the book Postcards of Ramsgate volume 4 that I am working on at the moment.
Michael, dear chap, the PC Brigade, who sadly lack any tolerance whilst appearing to champion it, will be moving your way shortly! The historic aspect and relevance of the time will elude them completely!
ReplyDeleteWell, as you are undoubtedly Anglo-Saxon, Jute, Nordic - Norman or Roman by descent somewhere, and all of these people entered the country somewhat illegally, perhaps you should put your hand up and say "I think you must be looking for me!".
ReplyDeleteMaybe having checked the voter's roll address already they were satisfied your reply tallied against what was recorded plus entry to any part of the property for purposes of search would have to be conducted under search warrant (or s18 PACE if an arrest is made of a person on or controlling a property at that time).

Bertie over the years I have discussed racism with people of many races and have come to the conclusion that the PC brigades definition of racism, is endemic to all of humanity, things like mimicking other accents is something everyone does. Arguing with an Irishman Afro Caribbean whatever he will mimic my accent and I his making points and repeating things the back to one another, things the one said that the other finds ridiculous. The trouble is that while harmful racism is easy to detect, it is very difficult to define, where the borderline is and this changes with circumstances.
ReplyDeleteWhat though is very evident is it is a subject that should be discussed more, what I find is very sad is that southern England has mostly lost its regional accents, and the subtle racial identity of us ordinary English is vanishing.
2.12 I wish I had thought of it at the time and would certainly have done so and would have enjoyed the reaction to that one. I believe my ancestry to be a fairly mixed probably more so than most.
15.32 I was lucky enough to go to a school that took pupils from all over the commonwealth and there are aspects many of the non-white non-English races that I very much wish I possessed.
