Sun, Art, some thoughts on watercolour painting on the beach

This is  a watercolour sketch done on Westbrook beach this afternoon, there was no pen or pencil sketching on this one, the thin horizontal lines are ivory black paint put on at the end.

What Went Wrong

I put the sky on first [cerulean blue] wetted the paper first then added the blue.

Then put the sea on Prussian blue mixed with yellow ochre but the sky hadn’t dried completely particularly on the left, hence the bumpy horizon.

The sand is a yellow ochre wash [very dilute paint] the people are painted on in thicker yellow ochre, the clothes and hair added when they are dry, quite soon in direct sun.

As an example of a different way of doing this, here is one I did last year on Ramsgate Sands, drawing the picture with india ink first [Pitt pen size S] and then painting it after

I started a pencil sketch of part of Ramsgate from the cross wall today.
here is today's picture in situ, is that how you spell it? the tide had gone out by then so there was nothing between sand an sea when I painted it, honest guv.
Dreamland car park was completely full today, I mention this as someone said it had closed
Oh yes the view from where I was sitting for this morning's pencil sketching.

    2. I was going to mention the plane crash in America: apart from the bodies scattered across the runway and the radar etc not working it seems that for only a hundred or so passengers they ended up filling 9 hospitals.

Clearly Manston and Infratil are excellent so there shouldn't be a crash but which hospitals would be used if a plane crashed on the towns?

Medical contingency plans exist for coping with major disasters which could involve a whole range of natural and accident source happenings. Why just planes from Manston crashing, Anon, many hundreds of others overfly Thanet from airfields further away and then there are major road pile ups, train crashes, the chunnel, floods, fires etc. Seems you have something of a one track mind.

By the way, what exactly has a plane crash in the USA got to do with Sun, Art and watercolours of a Ramsgate beach.

    4. Anon, 10:50, just where do you get your information. Bodies scattered across the runway was actually two killed and one of those was runover by an emergency vehicle, As for the hospitals, the injured did not fill nine but were spread around that many hospitals. That is normal procedure in order to spread the work load rather than putting all the pressure on one location.

You are just scaremongering as always.

    5. Good grief the ambulance ran over one of them? They were thrown clear form the wreckage still alive? Others were on fire and had to run into the sea to put the flames out. The pilot was a trainee so obviously it couldn't happen at Manston with the training flights?

    6. Nobody said it couldn't happen at Manston, Anon, but planes can crash anywhere they overfly regardless of the location of airports. Agree that crash landings are statistically more likely than falling out of the sky, but those tend to be on airfields, as at San Francisco, rather than towns. You are still showing your hatred of Manston and scaremongering.

    7. That would have been some run from the runway to the sea. Might have been quicker and more sensible to run to the fire tenders.

    8. I remember when the walkway accident occurred. I think 7 people died. People had to be transferred to Canterbury and to Ashford hospitals because QEQM couldn't cope. I think you'd be naïve to assume that there is are credible contingency plans for a major accident. There will undoubtedly be a piece of paper with some stuff written on it, but the devil is always in the detail. There so much political pressure to support the airport that nobody in authority who wants to keep their job would dare suggest that the King has no clothes (The emergency plan has no credibility).

    9. except anon 2:47 I read it was a firetender that ran the girl over. Out of the frying pan as they say

    10. Yes, but that unfortunate child was lying down when hit. Hardly the same as running as implied by old scaremonger with all his bodies scattered over the runway and the flamers running to the sea with professional airport firefighters in attendance.

    12. What utter nonsense you come up with, Anon 10:56. Which Afghan plane was that, when and at which airport. Why are the Manston firefighters useless, what evidence do you have to back that statement? All landings and take offs have to be covered by fire crews so, if there were movements after 5pm, then crews would be on duty.

You do nothing for your case with these utterances and the over flying of towns is not illegal.

    13. Sorry anons unsubstantiated comments suggesting local businesses are operating dangerously and illegally will only result in this blog being closed down, which presumably is what 10.56 hopes to achieve. 10.56 you may also consider that your attempts to put people off of visiting the area are not helpful to people like me who have to run a business here and where these comments fit in a post about watercolour painting defy anything I can imagine.

    14. Yes let's not discuss these things. Keep quiet Michael. Do as you're told. Pay your tax. Infratil and TDC are excellent.

But if there is no fire cover? And if the flight routes are illegal?

  5. In my parents day Ramsgate people were often referred to as 'redskins'. I don't know why. It was not considered to be a derogatory term. Has anyone out there heard of this?

  6. True Allan. Contingency Planning like the NHS Security of Electrical Supply Regs 2007 ?

    Maidstone Hospital A and E evacuated 2005

After the fire at Maidstone (It was the third failure incident of that installation but the only one in which mains reconnection must have hit a genny still connected and thus an electrical fire similar to the BBC Broadcast studio incident some years earlier)

Tony Blair took some time out from his campaigning because he directed that historical reports re unreliability of backup generators (including due to sabotage consistent with the |IRA Garland Plan) be immediately copied to the Northern Ireland Office.

There followed a period of direct reporting with recommendations to Downing Street, by Richard Card to whom Tony Blair directed a letter in 2005, and the 2007 new NHS guidelines followed.

And that is today's irrelevant thread theme relevance to the Garland Plan. With no opinions just facts.

    1. Anonymous, 10:05,

It would be interesting to have sight of the letters that you state Tony Blair wrote to Richard Card in 2005 & 2007. Presumably you have seen these letters, what did the PM say?

Please, John, don't encourage him. He is Richard Card and he has been writing to PMs, Ministers, Chief Constables, MI5, KCC et al for years with his conspiracy theories. Unless you want the full boring diatribe ranging from perjury by Tory councillors through to illegal cadet ranges and IRA plots, tread carefully.

    3. The above is Allan Mallinson. He believes there is no corruption at TDC and posts incessantly on the blogs with John Holyer to little point other than insult.

    4. If Allan Mallinson is like me, it is not so much about believing there is no corruption, but more about you producing some proof. In the absence of such, it is your comments that are devoid of point.

  7. Allan,

I just wondered if the PM's letters would advance my knowledge even if it was just something along the line of 'I acknowledge receipt of your letter the contents of which have been noted'.

Personally, I pay no attention to conspiracy theories. I believe that they they all emanate from just one small and secret group of people who out the get me.

  8. Talking of writing to people... I emailed Eric Pickles a few weeks back (congratulating him on making the right choice for Margate by approving Tesco at Arlington) and received a nice reply acknowledging my email today. So if / when this goes ahead everyone can blame me! ; )

  9. Goodness me, this is a post about watercolour painting on the beach, I mean the comments, what can I say? Should I respond in the context of the post?

I guess I can answer John’s question about Ramsgate Redskins, this was the name of the Ramsgate football team, named after the colour of their kit I believe.

"Personally, I pay no attention to conspiracy theories.."

Me neither. Conspiracies simply don't exist and never did. The word was invented by a conspiracy theorist but who knows where he got the idea?

  11. The following is interesting:

New guidelines on dealing with people who post offensive messages using social media have been released by the Director of Public Prosecutions and we will continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to take action against those who cross the line from their right to free speech to committing criminal offences.

  12. Anon 8.44 Conspiracy theory is a term used most often by individuals, with irrational faith in coincidence, as a Strawman fallacy to avoid engaging in the detail of likely cause, effect, association, error, concealment, dissembling, facts and falsehood.

For example the sort of person who opens his position by seeking fellow travellers and setting out a Strawman stall. EG "Are you as sick as I am of dole scroungers, politically correct, namby pamby limp wristed liberal poofs"

Very often such individuals are closet gay and must be horribly tormented by their inner demons.

And their blogging MO ? Codependence. They choose enablers. Persons to hate. "Aquifer man", Ian Driver etc

Of low IQ their world is a simple place. "I see no proof hence what is being said is a conspiracy theory" Academia calls this Juliet Hotel Reasoning as opposed to a priori reasoning. Having said that they tend to indulge a weak a priori tendency which is reasoning based on what has gone before for which no empirical proof is cited. Civil service or military experience. The inference they desire of their redarehsip is that in the mists of time experience equipped them with the wisdom to simply pronounce conclusions completely unsupported by evidence or rational argument.

They are more to be pitied than condemned. Imagine yourself in their position. They have contributed nothing, risked nothing and have nothing to contribute and lack the moral fibre to even try to build a better, safer world. Blogging is their only outlet. And if a few fellow travellers all endorse each other it is their psychological comfort.

    1. Anyone who accepts an allegation of wrong doing without proof is either incredibly gullible or simple minded, 6:10. Imagine a world where people were routinely condemned, even arrested and prosecuted on somebody else's say so based on suspicion or assumption alone. Amongst the comments that find their way onto these blogs we have had councillors by name accused of corruption and of perjury without a shred of evidence being produced. Similarly local government officers are named and accused variously of incompetence or corruption or both, again without evidence. Surely you can see that this is wrong and grossly unfair to those persons who are not in a position to defend themselves.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
