I would disagree in two areas and that is, 1) Manufacturing. Cummins, Emco Wheaton, Hornby Hobbies, Sericol to name but a few. Electronics is represented by Simrad/Navico. Sadly the RR of electronics, Racal, closed its factory in 1987 but at one time employed over 100 people locally. PAB Electronics closed in 2005 or thereabouts having gone insolvent. But you are quite right, we need a good mix of work opportunities in the area. 2) Thanet, especially Cliftonville around Northdown Road, has become something vastly different to how it once was, and has probably already become a dumping ground for all other areas.Still Even More Bemused Of Birchingtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01378876660344475835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3575321478441277410.post-77309844289947733452014-08-01T07:55:39.867+01:002014-08-01T07:55:39.867+01:00What a shame that certain people seem so out of to...What a shame that certain people seem so out of touch with the area like Ramsgate Town Council.

I have lived here all my life , invested and have owned a local business in Thanet for over 20 years employing local Thanet people at out three offices, I love this area with a passion and want to stay here. we need to grow the area in the right way or before you know it the area will become the main dumping ground for all other areas, courting all the undesirables in the south east and beyond. This is people who really don't and won't work demanding social housing, benefits and bringing nothing of value to the area except crime and misery tempted here by cheap housing be it existing ones yet to be built on old airport land.

With no jobs, no proper hour to London commuting, no land as it's all had cheap houses built on it and no outside investment then we have a wonderfully quaint area for retirement, the day tripper and sadly the long term unemployables.

We really need to stop listening to minorities just trying to be popular or just small minded, usually with vested interests, and look at sensible ways to market the area with the next 50 years in mind .

We have magnificent tourism opportunities from our beautiful beaches to the lively countryside, some good existing and new hotels and attractions like the Turner, hopefully the new lido site, a marina etc.

But

We also have people who do want to work, yes. Low paid Service industry jobs, yes. Retail jobs. All of which become unsustainable if working skilled people do not put down roots here.

We struggle with is our isolated location, manufacturing and technology jobs don't really exist yet, travel links for business like a high speed rail link are only half finished and infrastructure for businesses to invest is not here yet.

We need to offer a unique selling point. We have a huge airport with land around it at at a time when the need for more airports is required. Forget the small time passenger airport, although it was good whilst it lasted but think of a global sized leading well run freight airport with proper investment to boost the area .

This would need to work 24/7 or it fails, that is a fact which would involve some night flights but surely that's a small price to pay.

If it was to happen with everyone supporting it then big business will invest in the area bringing manufacturing and technology investment and leading to the jobs the area has never really benefitted from except perhaps Pfizers.

If you can send goods worldwide without the UK time and travel costs if the manufacture is on the doorstep to the fright airport then it makes perfect sense to locate there.

This takes the strain off other uk airports and keeps freight lorries off the motorways.

Personally I think the local papers such as the Thanet Gazette and the KM should pin their flags to the mast and get behind this as should Thanet and Kent County Council. Put politics to one side and actually help the people who matter, us.

In addition with well paid jobs comes prosperity in all areas of life. It may then mean that the Hs1 rail link will come to the area with perhaps a station at Manston and the port could also take advantage of a global airport for close European links for freight. Passenger services may come but it's doubtful.

If you bought your home on the flight path of the existing airport and are worried about noise then you should consider moving as now would be a good time with the airport closed.

One remembers though that you would have got your property cheaper because of the old airport being there!

There does need to be a small sacrifice usually in any chance to take a big opportunity but let's get the airport out there while we have the chance.

Ask yourself what will Thanet really be like in 50 years if this one time chance is list like so many others we have missed in the past?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3575321478441277410.post-89226952965312095072014-08-01T05:14:59.386+01:002014-08-01T05:14:59.386+01:00Barry, I assume that remark was addressed to my pr...Barry, I assume that remark was addressed to my previous comment? Dorset is a county of about 1024 square miles (2653 square kilometres). Thanet is part of a county, 39 square miles (103 square kilometres) in area. Chalk and cheese comes to mind.

TLAs don't work with me Barry, it means I have to guess what PTB stands for, Place To Be, Pass The Buck, Passenger Terminal Building, Powers That Be? Most would prefer night flights.

Light industry would be desirable. A few years ago Cummins moved in, employing 700 people. Most of the people I met there were from outside Thanet, but many did live in Thanet. And assuming I make a clear profit of £2 per ice cream then I would have to sell 110 per day, every single day of the year. There are currently 5000 mobile ice cream vans in the UK, selling £100,000,000 of ice cream. I make that an average £20,000 yes £20,000 of sales, not earnings, sales, per van. A long way short of £80,000.

But why would people come to Thanet? They did back in the fifties and sixties, but with the advent of cheaper flights and the guarantee of sunshine, most people now opt for an overseas holiday.
