Scout Parade Saint George’s day 2013 Margate Photos and possible Sunday ramble.

I have put all of the pictures of this event in the public domain and you should be able to download them at full resolution, feel free to use the pictures as you want, if you publish them online I would appreciate a credit. Here is the link https://picasaweb.google.com/103118335852639233427/20130421202

I used the camera in my mobile phone for this lot of pictures, which means that they are automatically uploaded to Picasa, so they are published in this way instead of my usual method of publishing them on my bookshop website in pages with about 100 pictures on each. I don’t know which method of picture publication people prefer, to me both seem to have pros and cons.

Couple of sketches today one when I stopped for a cup of tea at The Royal Harbour Brasserie, and another when I stopped for a cup of tea at The Turner Contemporary.

Apologies about this I am trying to learn something about image and text alignment on blogger.

A word of warning here about driving on our sand beaches, some people had taken a van down onto the beach in Margate to recover a boat today and the van had got stuck in the sand.

I didn’t stay to see if they managed to get it towed out, I rather doubt that even a fairly substantial four wheel drive could do this without the risk of getting bogged down too, you really need a tractor with track like a tank on it to pull something heavy out of sand.

  1. Bit disappointed to see some of the Margate twitterati complaining that this hadn't been advertised and was causing chaos.

Any one would think this was the first time the Scouts had completed a St George's Day Parade in Margate !!!

    Rule No. 1

If you're going to move into Margate Old Town, try and find out about some of Margate's traditions before moaning.

    1. anonymous 7:26 pm,

Before the internet people used to mumble and moan to each other at the bus queue.

For 13 years I lived by the Thames and the road from my place led to the Marathon route. Which meant I could not use my car from 0800 to 1600. They stop all the buses as well. The Tube was running but you had to cross the road to get there. This was not easy as crossing was subject to high viz jacket control. I remember one occasion where I had to wait 15 minutes to cross Bird Cage Walk trying to get to work. Great fun, for the first few years, then I got fed up with it.

    2. Unfortunately the police will no longer support parades such as the Thanet Scout Parade which happens annually as funding constraints prevent them. Therefore the Scouts had to police this themselves and they did have a few teething problems on the day. The papers had been written to asking them to advertise and turn up on the day but no one bothered. Paperwork and sanctions to go ahead had to be done to Thanet District Council and also to Kent Highways who were well aware of this and the fact we had to marshall this ourselves because the police would or could not so it had been ratified by them. This parade has happened every year for as long as I can remember and quite frankly if people want to moan about being held up for 15 minutes then sod them! We all thought it looked fantastic but then we support the scouts and what it does for the children who are in it, the skills it teaches them and the fundraising that goes on behind the scenes and the sheer hard work and dedication by a number of volunteers without which there would be no scouts, cubs, beavers etc. Some people just need to get a life and stop moaning.

  2. Great to see the derelict Fort Road Hotel still standing there. I thought this was supposed to have been demolished by TDC.

  3. Michael,

Thanks for the photos. I notice that some on parade are saluting without their hats on. Is this permitted in the Scouts, I wonder?

[and no anonymous, I'm not complaining, just interested, that's all, saluting is an interesting historical subject].

    3. Hilarious 06:39 - best ever comment. Holyer and Clarke have ruined this blog for sensible, informed debate with their piffle. Hamilton's following in Clarke's unpleasant footsteps. Their own blogs must be worth reading?

    4. Anonymouse 11:47 am,

Why are you replying to your own post by pretending to be somebody else? You buffoon.

    5. I'm 11:47 but not 06:39, you're a fool and a bore John. Can we pay you to go away? Your own blog must be tempting for your asinine views and insults?

    6. Anon,

I was prepared to accept that you are not 06:39 bearing in mind that he can count as far as ten.

But in truth your are one and the same person.

Why do you persist in using the "we". When you are just a lonely person with delusions of adequacy.

But yes, you can most certainly pay me not to talk to you. Let me have your name and address and I'll send you an invoice. You will discover your name and address written on the label tied around your neck.

By the way, your last sentence, phrased as a question, does not make sense. But then why should it be otherwise bearing in mind its author. Best you stick to counting, you're good at that, at least as far as ten.

    7. Unpleasant and incorrigible as always John with your childish insults. You can't help yourself. I am not 06:39 and the last sentence does make sense. You do not, except as an attention-seeking pensioner with nothing better to do. How much would you like to not blog?

    1. I for one think it's great to see the scouts celebrating St Georges day, I wish the rest of the population had the same pride in being British/English.

    3. John Hamilton,

The anonymouse is our resident troll scratching around looking to hurt someone. He is a lonely old man. Sometimes I almost feel sorry for him - but not often.

Besides you neglect that the buffoon might actually be good a drawing, on toilet walls and similar.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
