Fredrick Rogers Ramsgate 1913

I received rather a charming letter today containing the picture above, usually there are plenty of unusual postcards of old Ramsgate but scant explanation of what they are of so this one makes a pleasant change.

Runner number 37 is Fredrick Rogers pictured here in 1913 he spent his working life in Ramsgate police force. Click here to read the letter.

  2. Brilliant photo. This is what local blogs should be about, something of interest locally, instead of sniping at each other. Thanks Michael keep the pictures coming.

  3. Thanks for the words of encouragement Tony, I have put another big batch of pictures up today and am working on getting them into a series of paper publications, with the web being somewhat fluid in nature and the archives subject to funding problems, I think that getting cheap paper reprints in the hands of private individuals the only safe way of making sure they are preserved for future generations.

Ken I have grave reservations about demolition and rebuilding in a similar style, I think in the long term Ramsgate’s prosperity will probably reliant on the high proportion of unusual old buildings that we have, yes certainly if it’s impossible to save a building, but having just witnessed what happened to the Marina Restaurant I do have doubts about the judgment of those are involved in condemning parts of our heritage.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
