The Village of Acol and the Gateway of China

For the most part I have stuck to the water safety issues and frankly feel that the planning department should just send the application back to the developer, telling them to come up with a proper surface and sewage draining scheme, before wasting time considering the application.
Now all of the existing developments on the site on the site have had to have 50 meter wide screening belts planted on the site, the two X type warehouses will be right down at the end of the site next to the village of Acol.

From my experience in working in factories I have a fairly good idea of what these warehouses are likely to be like, the are huge buildings like aircraft hangers, inside the will probably be almost totally automated and run by computers, to minimise the number of people employed.

Around them outside is a massive lorry park and loading area that runs night and day all the year round, generating continuous light, noise and air pollution.

The lorries about 100 of them at any one time will be continually starting up from cold, which is when they develop the blackest most polluting exhaust fumes.

I can see no provision for adequate screening belts, so why o why, not put this as far away from the village as possible?
Of course all the polluting particles in the air that land on the fields nearby will leach into the ground right next to the pumping station, but I am not concentrating on water pollution today.

  2. Rupert, tis a funny old world living in the middle of town where noise pollution is an ever increasing problem, I envy your quiet village life, the grass being greener, though soon to be grey I’m afraid.

  3. We have plenty of green in Kent, we need jobs and excitement here in Acol.

  4. Unfortunately, Rupert, there's getting to be less & less green in Kent. If it carries on, some other county will become known as *The Garden of England*.

I know jobs are scarce in this area, but from things I've heard, it seems the jobs being offered by various companies are NOT for the local workforce.

  6. Michael, you refer to quiet village life, Where would this be. I my village we have the obligatory hoodies, usually drunk, who wander up and down the village around 10pm, we have irresponsible dog owners who fail to clear up after their pooches, a neighbourhood 'watching' network who want to know the ins and outs of everyone elses life, and of course the odd crimewave and murders(some unsolved). Its like Coronation street condensed. Oh yes and no public transport after 5pm and no shop or phone box. Apart from that its heavenly.

  8. Kent, the Garden of England? Surely with all the concrete that's been poured on it over the years, it's more like the patio!

  11. God!! Every time someone raises a concern over anything linked to a foreign individual, concern or nation; then the old cry of "RACISM" is expressed by someone [see 9.8.08 22.09]. Well you have certainly been well programmed by Government indoctrination over the last few years, haven't you. There are obviously both points for and against this scheme. But it is equally apparent that we are not being told the whole truth here. Please read the arguments both for and against this, and form your own opinion, rather than just making a blanket statement that everyone against China Gateway is a Racist. If this was purely a U.K based initiative, then surely the same concerns would exist.

It comes through loud and clear that you have a problem with this project because involves the Chinese.

I believe that the vast majority of the minority of residents who object to the gateway are really racists. This is my view, and if you really think about it you know I am right.

  14. I agree, we are all concerned about human right in China, but what we have with the anti-China Gateway people is what appears to be mostly anti-chinese RACISM

  15. Ah well, first of all from a personal perspective, I'm broadly in favour with the project. Secondly, being from London, not Thanet, my family is now multi-cultural, and personally speaking I feel the richer for it. Thirdly, I can honestly say that I have never encountered a chinese national whom I have disliked. My brother-in-law's Tai wife is coming over to stay with us in a few weeks for six months. So this is nothing to do with any racist feeling on my part. However, I also know many who disapprove of this scheme, and feel it's their right to equally express their opinion without being labelled.

I agree with the China Gateway for many reasons, but mainly due to the national problem faced by unskilled school leavers, who again are equally labelled as being layabouts and yobs when they are unable to find employment. Without work they have no HOPE to aspire to attaining a stable life; and many unfortunately do descend into drug taking, alcoholism and anti-social behaviour. They have no respect for a society, they feel have let them down. Any chance of creating employment should surely be embraced.

BUT, I am willing to listen to the arguments put forward against this scheme, and am always open to persuasion that it may not be for the best. That is what democracy is all about.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
