VOLUNTEER HELPS TACKLE DOMESTIC ABUSE

Thanet district Council press release

A local charity that helps victims of domestic abuse has benefitted from a Westbrook teenager’s voluntary work with Sport 4NRG.

Michael Dobson (17) won the Kent Volunteering Award for sports volunteering for his work with Sport 4 NRG over the last two years, including helping out at events like the national beach volleyball championships.

Part of his prize was £400 to donate to the charity of his choice. Instead of giving it to a big national charity, Michael decided to donate the money to the Oasis Domestic Abuse Service, which help women and children who have been affected by domestic abuse in Thanet.

Colin Rouse, from Sport 4 NRG said: "The fact that Michael has made this donation to an important local charity just shows what a conscientious young man he has become. He thought his money would make more of a positive impact if he was to donate it locally, as he enjoys contributing to his local community. He decided that because domestic abuse often affects young people in the family, he wanted to help those young people who may be in danger, or just feeling sad, lonely and isolated. We are very proud of the progress Michael has made in his life since first attending Sport 4 NRG three years ago. He is a great lad to have around and he puts 100% into everything he does. I hope other young people see the example Michael sets and follow suit."

The manager of Oasis said: “When we opened our doors twelve years ago, approximately two women a week were being murdered in the UK as a result of domestic violence. Sadly that figure still remains at the same. Every day, women's refuges, like Oasis, house thousands of women and children, made homeless by someone who claimed to love them. However, there will be many more women who are not receiving this support. At Oasis we hope to support the victims of Thanet and beyond, to enable women and children to live life free from violence and intimidation. This may be by offering them a home at our safe house, by helping them to remain safely in their homes, by moving them to a place of safety elsewhere or even by simply listening and understanding.”

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
