Ramsgate Sands around 1830

I recently bought this old print of Ramsgate, it should expand fairly well with a bit of clicking. To date it for you, after 1815 as it shows steam boats and before 1842 because it shows the lighthouse designed by Benjamin Wyatt that was replaced in 1842 by the one we have now designed by John Shaw. Coastguard station centre right.

Margate Pier and Droit House in 1823

I am wondering if the round structure half way up the pier is a camera obscura, I know there was one on Margate Jetty but that wasn't there as early as 1823.This one come from the Mick Twyman collection

 This is Broadstairs in 1841 lifted from the web here  OK just Victorian although I would guess the drawing for the print would have been just about done in Georgian times.

Many Thanks to David for sending me this photo of his lithograph of Ramsgate. It should expand with a bit of clicking. Various prints of roughly this view of Ramsgate have come up over the years and when they do I fiddle with Google maps and try to work out where the view is from. one option is that is before 1845/7 so Christ Church hasn't been built. Anyway I don't think from St Lawrence down the High Street to Ramsgate but perhaps more over towards Vale Square, what do you think?

Onto Broadstairs 

Much easier to work out this one of Broadstairs, the tall building in the middle is Fort House which was built in the early 1800s and forms the core of what is now Bleak House extensively enlarged and refronted in 1901.

St John's Church Margate 1850 before it was restored in 1875, the roof in this one interests me and I think is probably boards and tarpaper.

Here at Michel's Bookshop in Ramsgate we have been fairly busy so far this year. I put this partly down to so many secondhand bookshops closing in East Kent. This means there is hardly anywhere else left for people to sell their books to, resulting in us buying a lot of good quality books.

The reduction of the number of Thanet shops that you can actually buy something in and with it the closure of all of the other independent secondhand bookshops is a bit of a double edged sword for us.

 

A Bad Time for some Thanet Bookshops and some Thanet Archive Photos

 

This picture is of Saint Augustine's Abbey library in Ramsgate, the shelves are empty because it was taken after the monks left Ramsgate, link to more Saint Augustine's Abbey photos Just at the moment empty bookshelves in Thanet are on my mind.

Broadstairs Bookshop has just closed.

Here at Michel's Bookshop in Ramsgate we are still here with no plans to close. We are fairly busy local history books and secondhand books are already selling Christmas presents and it looks as though the pre-loved book is becoming an ideal and sustainable Christmas present.

Of course independent bookshops have suffered in most towns and Thanet was no exception.

WH Smith in Margate and WC. Have I missed anything?
