The end of an era?

Do you recognise this Thanet pub? As you can see things were pretty final there today.

Canterbury today, the main objective was to buy a Moomin calendar for the kitchen, this was the result of an Amazon buying disaster.

Ordered in early Dec, email saying it would be late enc of Dec followed by refund mid Jan. I wanted to go to Jessops and look at the cameras.

 Debenhams has now closed.

A very large part of the colossal overheads related to trading in a town like canterbury is being surrounded by other busy businesses which attract the customers.

Things did improve

We bought some books for Michael's Bookshop where I work in Ramsgate

Hospice Bookshop mostly, but even in Waterstones sale which provided a 2020 Moomin calendar at half price

very late lunch in Waterstones cafe where I did a small amount to my watercolour sketch from there.

went to Third Eye to Velvet Underground T-shirt, but they didn't have any "Yes we have no bananas"

 but we are closing down.

Reading art and interest wise the moment I'm focused on the history of the bronze age and the early iron age. particularly as it's during this period but most of the major religions and most of the the texts that they are based in seem to be focused on stories that were universal within the late bronze age early iron age. It's a source of some fascination to me having been an Anglican religious at one time.

So at the moment fiction wise I'm reading Madeline Miller's Song of Achilles and I have a pile of similar historical fiction.

I was particularly pleased when an batch of new stock which we will turn into second-hand stock by penciling cheaper prices in the font arrived here at Michael's Bookshop today, (this just relates to the way things are in the book trade,) had an Ursula le Guin one of my favourite authors who usually writes fantasy but this batch had her novel Lavinia which appears to be be set in the Spartan Trojan ancient Greek area.

Funny sort of Day at work here at Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate, I took all the selves off of one of the bookcases in the general fiction section, put a new backing in, waxed the shelves and when I tried to put the shelves back, six of the eight were fine but two of them were about an inch too short. I had to go and find a new six inch plank and saw two new ones off,

'...'One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you
grow shorter.'

'One side of WHAT? The other side of WHAT?' thought Alice to herself.

'Of the mushroom,' said the Caterpillar,...'

Anyway it's OK now - a fairly large amount of books can have strange effects.

Perhaps something to do with the fiction that went out while I was working

 I think this is a late picture from the 1950s just before the council had it demolished.

This is the same building painted by JWM Turner around 1800, before it had the Victorian mock gothic makeover, probably done around 1870. It does show what a Victorian with ample funds can do to a charming Georgian house.

I've had a pretty lazy day at work here at Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate, it was fairly quiet and I mostly nattered to customers when I should probably have been building more book shelving. I am reading The Bachelors by Muriel Spark at the moment which is doing the trick.

We put out a reasonably good batch of books today
