HALF TERM ACTIVITIES OUT ON THANET’S COAST

Thanet district Council press release

Cycling, seaweed and rockpool rambles are amongst the great range of bookable coastal activities on offer from the Thanet Coast Project during the May half term.

You can 'cycle to the Vikings' on a gentle cycle ride, suitable for the whole family, that takes place on Bank Holiday Monday (25 May) at 2pm. Lasting two and a half hours, it heads out of Broadstairs harbour and follows the clifftops to visit the Hugin Viking Ship at Pegwell Bay five miles away.

'Smugglers and Serpents' are the topic of Emily Parrish's stories from the sea on Wednesday 27 May at 10am. Meeting outside the Fayreness Hotel, five to 14 year olds can hunt for the smugglers' lost treasure.

There are more opportunities for the whole family to get out and about with the "all ability" rockpool rambles. The first, on Thursday 28 May, at 10.30am, is suitable for five to 11 year olds, while the session on Friday 29 May at 10.30am is suitable to 11 to 18 year olds. Meet at the disability beach hut on Margate Main Sands.

There's a chance to volunteer your help to spruce up Ramsgate's Sea Garden on Saturday 23 May from 10am to 1pm. The following day, you can explore with 'Seaweeds and their secrets' on a guided tour by seaweed expert Ian Tittley from the Natural History Museum at Dumpton Gap on Sunday 24 May at 6.30pm.

Later in the week, the BBC Natural History Unit film "Message in the Waves", that kick-started plastic bag free campaigns, will be screened at the Margate Media Centre at 7pm on Tuesday 26 May. The next day, Wednesday 27 May, at 11am, there's a 'Rock Doc walk' in Pegwell Bay, Cliffsend, a youth surfer taster session with the Joss Bay Surf School and the week finishes with the chance to book a trip out to see the seals. Costing £22.50 per person, the "Wildlife Sailing" open yacht sails out on Saturday 30 May at 9am from Minnis Bay, Birchington.

Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project Manager, said: "There's something for everyone coming up over the half term holidays. From seals to seaweed and cycling to smuggling, our events cover a huge range of activities, with many open to the whole family. It's a great way of getting outside and having fun along our beautiful coastline."

All these events are free, except for the seal trips. As places are limited, you need to book online at http://www.thanetcoast.org.uk/ or call into a Visitor Information Centre, who can book for you.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
