POLICE STATION CAVENDISH STREET RAMSGATE bit of a planning nightmare.

83 two bedroom flats on the site of the old police station in Cavendish street with 18 parking spaces. Many flats are below ground level. Thanks to Steve for pointing this one out to me, a problem with the way the council put up their planning applications is that the big ones show up as much as the little ones so one is inclined to miss them.

I am becoming increasingly concerned about the high density residential builds within the town centre, I am not saying here that I am against social housing or housing that is likely to have a high turnover of residents.

My concern is that it is should be properly mixed with family residential accommodation, I am a bit concerned that we may turn our town centres into ghettos of social deprivation without very careful planning.

I am very much aware of the problems associated with what after all are blocks of flats and have been trying to study the plans.

The problem here is that the plans are not published very well on the internet some of the writing on some of the sheets is illegible, something that makes me smell a rat.

The developers website http://www.lilybrook.net/ isn’t any help either, the trouble is here in Thanet I no longer trust the council to make sensible decisions about this sort of thing.

The planning ref is OL/TH/09/0853 and the planning website http://www.ukplanning.com/thanet you have to go there and put the ref in the search box as it is some wonder of government financed IT where you can’t actually make links to pages.

The picture above if you click on it to enlarge you will see what I mean about the definition.

Anyway I am not saying that I am definitely coming out against the application I just haven’t been able to look at it properly and I think they already have planning permission for something very similar anyway, so this revised application may actually be an improvement.

  1. If Bertie's data is correct the government's target of 7,500 new dwellings by 2026 will soon be reached.

1,983 completions so far and 4,624 permissions granted.

It wont leave a lot for building in the twenties!

  2. Of course Michael, the good thing about housing lots of poorer people locally is that they're more likely to use local shops like yours that are cheap (in the good sense of the word!) rather than going to Westwood Cross, especially as many don't own cars. The Ramsgate town centre would die if only London commuters lived there.

  4. I work for a housing association based in London which provides mixed tenure housing throughout the south of England (none in Thanet) when we build we try to mix the tenure some outright sale, some shared ownership, some intermediate market rent (including Try Before You Buy) and general needs. Looking at this development I can only think they are creating a development that is not needed. No one is going to buy any for investment when there are already to many apartments to let in Thanet, anyone who can afford to buy outright has a far better choice of locations around the island and younger people looking to get on the ladder will be buying in areas where they will be working and the last time I looked, housing benefit didn't cover the cost of a first time buyers mortgage this has got to be a turkey.
The HCA has identified that people with incomes below 20k are most likely to need housing over the coming years and the kind of housing they will require is likely to be three bedroom homes preferably houses. Which developer in their right mind is going to build anything like that round here, wheres the profit? This kind of development does nothing to improve the local environment nothing to help local families and nothing for the economy. welcome to the future slum of Ramsgate.

  5. Anon. 19:51 is a bit out of touch. The great non-working class just get a taxi to WC on their benefits

Also there are not enough pictures in Michael's books.

I have to agree with anon 23.03 we do not need more flats in Thanet as TDC recognises in their "vision" "Shaping the Future"

  6. Do you think anyone in TDC has a "vision".
The vision in the most part was probably decided by people who don't live in Thanet and were more interested in lunch or where to hold the next "away day" than anything else.

  7. Am I suffering from dementia but I am sure that the ratio of homes to parking is to low. The fact is we have to many low value poorly maintained flats here already. We dont need more flats we want the ones that are here to have better landlords and be bought up to a better standard.

  11. It is high time that homes were built for first time buyers, many young couples are being excuded from the housing market the reason being the greedy grasping rich who are grabbing everything they can lay hands on are buying all the cheaper houses to rent to their less fortunate fellow men at inflated rents, not legally wrong but morally wrong,I have always said no man should own the roof over another mans head I know some can never cope with their own homes and some like to move around a lot I hope I live long enough when home ownership is in the reach of all who want it.

  12. You are all pretty much RIGHT, the main problem in TDC is that all of the serving officers; (you know; the career people) that have been there for years and years Don't Live IN THANET. They nearly all live in the outlying villages; the very picturesque villages with one or two pubs and restaurants. Thanet District Council serving officers have been found a failed council by the governments own audit commission for more then 14 years. But so what! why should they care, nothing ever gets done about that, no one gets the sack or demoted Not like the real world of business. T should be a prerequisite of the job description that the officers and the voted members LIVE IN THANET, especially at time like these. These alien like people have an air about them and they make there own rules and stuff you and anyone else who disagrees with them.

  13. And what about TDC screwing up the planning application for the new Tesco development at the Arlington House on the seafront, hahahaha W*~#*rs.

Grade 1 listed scenic railway cant build within 200m or so, Ireversable once its granted, but how much will TDC spend on leagal fees trying to reverse that. you think your council tax is expensive now, hahahaha hahahahahaha hahahahahah

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
