Sexing up medieval ships some pictures and a walk in Ramsgate.

When it comes to medieval cogs and caravels my usually sound knowledge of frigging in the rigging has a tendency to fall to pieces, one of my children asked me if The Matthew is a she. The old mortal thoughts, tend towards unsex me here, oh direst cruelty I am filled toe topful with confusion.

Most of my knowledge of medieval ships, thus far coming from the letters of the medieval kings to the lords warden of the cinque ports, pronounced sank, which may not be a good omen.

Not so misty today so better pictures of The Matthew or The Dawn Treader whoever she may be, still nothing on the council’s website about this important vessel though, although they can afford to move Margate tourist information centre over the road apparently. Perhaps KCC are footing the bill as I am told where the Turner Contemporary is concerned the funding is bottomless.

Here are the rest of today’s pictures http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id11.htm and I will try to write something about them if I get time later.

The new house on Plains of Waterloo is continuing to go up, the Pleasurama foundations and support pillars are still going up on the wrong end of the site and not the piles that were expected, no one seems to know why. More new pictures on The Great Wall of Ramsgate as you can see. There is a dredger tied up in the harbour so we can only hope for some dredging before the harbour becomes completely dry at low water. The boat hoist is evidently working again after its experience with the pothole. The large concrete pontoons are not the new harbour barrage pontoon but they are for The London Array. Jack’s Cantina, Harvey’s Fish thing is up for sale.

  1. Have just discovered your site, and really like it.

From Ramsgate but now living in Spain its nice to read about Ramsgate and see the pictures of whats happening keeping up with the changes, my Son in Sweden does the same.

  2. The Droit House I think Peter, aren’t they, I believe in terms of government spending, moving a perfectly good tourist information office a few hundred yards refitting a new building and leaving another empty shop front in Margate, I believe it’s called getting a little for a lot.

  4. The new pictur on the great wall of Ramsgate is kind of ironic, seeing as as from 14/3/11 the Ostend Spirit no longer sails on the Ramsgate-Ostend route and LD Lines have withdrawn completely. Leaving TransEuropa with a 2 ship service, from what was at one point a 6 ship service. The 2 TEF vessels had been listed as 'for sale' on a ship brokers website. So what is the future for TEF? Surely they cannot maintain a profitable service with just 2 return sailings a day? Arew set to see the end of TEF and have another empty council owned asset sat there rotting away?

  5. sad news about the ostend spirit, i hope tdc covered its 500k investment in dredging with some sort of guarantee or performance bond.

To be fair, the port and harbour have needed dredging for some years, so TDC's layout of £500,000 is a snip at what they should have paid for constant standardised dredging. Plus the fact that when the windfarm vessels came into port, they paid for the dredging needed for them to access. TDC can't really moan, they have got off lightly considering.

  7. No surprise about the closure of Harvey's.

Seldom have I read such lacklustre reviews - Jay Rayner's in The Observer probably needed the lawyers to cast an eye over it, it was so rough.

I miss the old pub with the fish tank down the end...

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
