Watercolour sketch from Canterbury Cathedral Cloister started.

The weather today being somewhat summery and my younger children intent on a shoe buying mission to Canterbury I armed myself with my outdoor watercolour painting equipment.

Apart from the normal stuff, paintbox, brushes and pad, with my advancing years I also take a blow-up cushion and sunglasses that have a bifocal reading lens in the bottom of the glass.

So here is the Canterbury Cathedral Cloister watercolour sketch so far. The Great Cloister in the foreground, rebuilt under Prior Chillenden (1390-1411), tracery of hexagons with sub-cusped quatrefoils; not entirely evident in the sketch yet. To the right of centre background Chapter House rebuilt by Prior Eastry in 1304. Centre background The Great Dormitory capable of housing 140 monks I think would date from about 1160 as it was built under Lanfranc.

For the most part a peaceful place to paint, provided you have an inflatable cushion to sit on.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
