I was unable to get away from work in my bookshop on Wednesday afternoon, so didn’t get any pictures of the bathing party, so many thanks to Janet Porter for letting me copy hers.

My day off today and I managed to get over to Broadstairs and take some more pictures of the people who go to considerable trouble to dress up in costumes of the period Charles Dickens wrote about.

About 300 pictures taken today mostly of the people who make a considerable effort to dress up for the Dickens Festival.

As far as the copyright goes if it is for a non commercial purpose then please feel free to use the pictures how you like, if you need any of them in high definition email me, link on the sidebar, same if you want to use any of them for commercial purposes.

If you need any of them printed out all the libraries and most copy shops should be able to do this and I will do any that I can in the bookshop for anyone who wants them, remember it is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

the main advantage with the large size originals is that I can crop out part of the picture and still get a fairly high definition print for you, so if there is something modern in the background or you were carrying a plastic carrier bag I can sometimes remove it.

The pictures started publishing to the internet at 5.25pm and it will be about an hour before they are all uploaded and you can see them all, it takes a lot longer to put things on the web than to view them.

Two lots of apologies here, one is some of the pictures are on their sides and I will endeavour to sort that out tomorrow, this is because the monitor I use on my day off is much smaller that the one in the bookshop.

The other is that shop and family commitments meant that I once again failed to get pictures of Margate’s Big Event.

I should point out that this isn’t a deliberate slight to the council or Margate but due to the fact that I run the shop on Saturday and like last year one of my children’s friends birthday parties falls on the Sunday and is held in Broadstairs on that day.

Art books on the shelf and photographic problems

This is a bit of a Monday morning meander between customers so excuse me being off the plot a bit. I was going to put up pictures of fiction on the shelf but where the fiction is in the bookshop it’s too narrow to get far enough away from the books to photograph them as you can see.

Well here are the art books on the shelves in the shop, the usual mix of secondhand, reps samples, other people’s bankruptcies in fact anything I can find to have a reasonable art stock at prices that are a lot cheaper than anywhere else.

The architecture books are lurking in with the art books at the moment, architecture is a section that moves around to where there is space for it.

The shop is fairly busy at the moment, lots of Christmas shopping especially in the local history section, I was amazed on Saturday the number of people who made it through the torrential rain to buy their books. I had rather expected most people shopping to be at Westwood Cross where one can get from shop to shop pretty much under cover. I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is young single and employed and therefore has plenty of disposable income, he said. “Having spent a long time in the inevitable traffic jam last week, I had to wait for 20 mins for a parking space, I’m doing the rest of my Christmas shopping in the town or online.”

Back to the photography as you can see lots of bits in my camera again which is a pain, I will have to get one of the youth of today, with better eyesight than mine to clean it out again. Does this only happen to me I wonder I try to be careful when changing lenses is there any technique that could help to reduce the problem?

The brewery is I believe Cannons?

My grandfather Fredrick Rogers 6th from the left back row was a drayman delivering to T & W pubs, used to have to go in every day including Christmas day to care for the horses, lived close by with his family. Group photo enclosed, Nilce? Fredrick, Alice Florence my mother. Front Fredrick and Mary his wife.

Rogers son Fredrick was a detective sergeant in the Ramsgate police whose son was in the RAF WW2 and managed Littlewoods post war.

The street scene is Lord Mayors Day 1910. Sincerely Mary Hughes.

Ellison’s Entertainers

First called The Highwaymen, later known as Ellison’s Entertainers this troupe entertained at Ramsgate and Brighton that I know of.

Walk round part of Ramsgate

I went to get some chicken from Rooks the butchers this morning and took the scenic route click here and here for the pictures nothing very exciting but I do feel privileged to live in such an attractive town.

As I have said before I have given up out of town shopping altogether, on the basis that you either use it or lose it, chicken curry tonight well under £1 per head, and a lot of cookery cheats involved.

Photographing Ramsgate Library

I was talking to a prominent local figure who has done a lot of work with the save Ramsgate Library group yesterday, he visited the library last week with other prominent local figures for a meeting and viewing of the restoration’s progress.

What he said beggars belief. “The developers and Kent County Council’s representatives said we were under no circumstances to take photographs, a lady journalist had already started photographing the work and they stopped her.”

“What reason did they give?” I asked.

“You’re not going to believe this one.” He said.

They said. “Because the library is next to Clarendon House School any photographs taken in or of the library have to be approved by the head teacher to ensure none of the pupils appear in them.”

“What even the pictures taken inside the library.” I asked.

“Yes,” he said, “and the funniest part of all was that the meeting was at 4 pm and all of the pupils hade gone home.”
