March init, ides an all that, god Mars, stabbing in the back Brutus and so on, once if you had wanted to know what ides were, you would have looked in a book, but now a quick visit to Google and you will know what I am on about, although without the old itc I wouldn’t have been on about it here anyway.

There are quite a few new kids on the block in the Thanet blogging scene, most notably Driver’s Thanet http://driversthanet.blogspot.co.uk/ and of course Driver’s nemesis john Hamilton http://johnhamilton3rd.blogspot.co.uk/

Not quite sure which of these is doing the most to promote Cllr Driver’s case, but neither blog nor blogger seems to have quite understood one of the fundamentals of the Thanet blogging scène which is to link to the other Thanet blogs.

In fact to take this further as a reflection on understanding the internet in general, which is that on a superhighway system, not linking to anything at all apart from being a tad onanistic, produces a cul-de-sac which the search engines ignore.

My guess is that we will get the Ezekiel trial result today, is it a bit wososname of me to think that the jury would ensure a whole week off normal work and stretch coming up with a verdict.

My day off yesterday and I went to Margate, a quick look at The Turner Contemporary, my take is the exhibition Subject to Constant Change, need renaming Subject to Constant Maintenance.

Two of the artworks in it were definitely broken, one the same as last time I went and one different. What with it being contemporary art I am really not confident that after three visits I have seen all of this exhibition working properly.

What really bugs me about this is that none of the art critics seem to have noticed this, I rally do get the feeling that if the went off to collectively to write a piece on the Da Vinci cartoon during a power cut, so the thing was invisible, they wouldn’t mention the fact and would drivel on about the velvet darkness and Da Vinci being an invisible and therefore more significant Renaissance Man.

from the standard of the production and considering that this is a film about film related art one does wonder if the £1m coming out of my council tax to fund this is being well spent.

Having bought a book and a few we went on to The Captain Digby version three, two previous pubs there having fallen int the sea due to cliff erosion.

Well as predicted the jury have come up with their verdict today: Ex-Leader Thanet Council Sandy Ezekiel found guilty for misconduct in public office.

Thanet Life, Simon Moores Moves the Goalposts, is it a new Thanet Blog Wars?

I have been commenting on Thanet Life blog since sometime in 2006, sending Simon information and pictures that he has published there since that time too, so I was pretty much gob smacked when I got an email from him today saying that he was refusing to publish a comment I had made there. This hasn’t happened before and I am not certain if I will ever be able to comment there again, or for that matter if I will even bother to try.

This relates to a key Thanet issue that Simon raised on his blog about consultation over the disposal Thanet’s council owned leases.

Here is what the said:

Andrew, the most fundamental change is the treatment of long leases of 25 years or more as part of the overall asset disposal process.

The emphasis is now very much on consultation as part of such a process to avoid circumstances where the council is seen to be over-riding the wishes of local people without proper consideration of their arguments. 1.37 pm.”

Now an important point here is when this change came into effect, because of some of the disposal issues that have come up recently in Thanet. There have been many contentious asset issues in Thanet, part of Hartsdown Park in Margate being the most recent.

Here in Ramsgate there are several large council owned assets in prominent positions and some of them have been effected by this rule, Pleasurama where the council granted a 200 year lease to the developer without any consultation, The Maritime Museum where the council invoked this rule in a way that caused the closure of the museum, the slipways where the council used this rule to prevent a developer obtaining a long lease to build a bar complex there.

This is essentially an issue about money, as developers need leases longer than 25 years to finance developments on council owned land, hence the council are able to effectively halt the Margate Football Club development, that has planning permission, by not offering the club a long lease. This can also effect grant funding for charitable organisations wishing to run council assets. There is also the common sense side of this, it you are going to run a museum or theatre, you are in for the long hall and can’t invest heavily when the building’s security is a matter of the council’s whim, even if you could I doubt the charity commissioner would let you.

This is a quote from an email I received from the council in February 2010.

“The position regarding the Clock-Tower Building, occupied by the Steam Trust is as follows. The subject was discussed by the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny (Asset Management Working Party) in view of the length of lease sought by the Trust.”

With relation to your pervious replies the difficulty here is that you are different from the other bloggers, in as much as you are privy to council information that we are not.

In an ideal world the council’s information department would have a forum where major local issues could be discussed openly on the internet, it is the perception from outside the council, is that the councils information department exists exclusively to control the information that is available to the public.

I suppose in a way even that would be mostly unnecessary if the council published all of the information it held, apart from the information that would be refused in a foi request, as the council receives it, onto its website.

This could be achieved with considerable savings in costs to the council, by the council insisting that all information sent to the council, was supplied in preferred file formats, with the council levying a charge to commercial organisations either sending information on paper – so it has top be scanned in – or in a file format that has to manual converted for web publication.

In this instance I would say that you are as much a victim as the rest of us, in as much as the changes to such a fundamental rule about the way the council conducts its business, should have been publicised and the rules governing the way the council rents out its properties should be clearly and openly available on the council’s website.

The discussion I had with the leader of the council isn’t pertinent to this issue as it relates to a lease of less than 25 years and not the older lease that council didn’t issue due to the new rules. However it demonstrates very clearly what I am saying about information that you are privy to and we are not, put the shoe on the other foot for a moment and consider the situation if I was privy to your conversations with the leader of the council and said to you. “Simon. Don’t misunderstand me here I delete comments that are potentially libellous, offensive or containing personal abuse, I suppose all bloggers do, but to delete a comment because it disagrees with your point of view, well that is another matter altogether.

When a local councillor who claims to support transparency and impartiality does this, then one can only form ones own conclusions.

A word of warning, if you thought the rest of this blog was a bit boring, this is the pits.
First the Google referral stats for this blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/ if this is all Geek to you, they show the people who arrived here by clicking on a link, on another website and may be an indicator of that site’s popularity.

Next the referral stats for my press release blog http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id3.htm I have only put these up because they show my other blog in a very good light, it seems to have overtaken Eastcliff Richards.

This is all a bit like Adrian Mole and measuring ones thing, once it stops growing due to age one tends to measure other things, in this case statistics.

Next my act of audience piety, a screen shot of the visitor statistics for this blog during last month http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/311/id4.htm many thanks to the 4,186 individuals who read this blog during the last month.

Next a bit of a peculiar disparity, things as the say don’t quite add up, being a closet geek I use special statistics, this means I embed a wasisname in my websites and the lovely machine at google reads this and gives me all sorts of information about the site usage.

What about the 128,752 visitors since July when the site meter that has been on the site since – oh well for ages – only registers 177,683. there is of course the possibility that loads of visitors have been sneaking in by some sort of backdoor and missing the site counter. Sadly though I suspect that my metaphorical thing is shorter than I thought.

There is a neck and neck race between Bignews Margate and Thanet Life, when I looked yesterday the flying doctor was in front but overnight the intrepid track layer has crept in front by four places, this battle between plane and train – what am I talking about here and was it only yesterday I metaphorically measured my thing?

I imagine most of the other blog writers will be far too self-confident to even look and see where that stand in this dubious scale.

Just one further thought and that is the time effort involved, with all of the different bits of web publishing and taking screen shots, these pinch and a punch, posts are some of the most time consuming ones that I do, this one took about an hour to put together.

An hour of my life, you see blogging is really for the insane, why do it? The answer is, I don’t really know.

Just thought if this web statistics thing interests you, I can’t unlock the password on my blogger statistics, probably because I am not geeky enough and can no longer unlock the http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/ as I have had had to switch its hosting to a Windows server, because of a problem with an Access based searchable online database, you didn’t really want to know that did you?

Thanet blogs and some Ramsgate pictures

Having just updated my little used blog Thanet Blogs http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/
and considered the sanity of blogging, posting can become something of an addiction and I sometimes wonder if I post when I really haven’t got anything much to say.

At least this wasn’t the case over the last couple of days, I see the Gazette has published an article about the Pleasurama cliff façade repairs, I couldn’t find it on their website though.

They seem to be a lot more certain of their information than me, saying definitely that two more panels are bulging and going to be repaired.

Nothing about the maritime museum or the hijacking of the Little Ship Sundowner by TDC, as you see from today’s pictures both the steam tug Cervia and the maritime museum are adorned with flags for the Operation Dynamo commemorations so perhaps the situation there is better than I thought.

Anyway having deleted the dead blogs I had a trawl around for some new Thanet blogs, to replace the ones I had deleted, the criteria being that they must have local content and a reasonable amount of both posts and comments within the last month.

It would seem that local blogging is diminishing, if anyone has any ideas on this one please let me know.

A few thoughts on the pictures, first sorry the camera needs cleaning again, the pictures taken inside are of the Custom House where Ramsgate Town Council have taken up residence.

The Amco Express shop in Queen Street is to be a European supermarket, I am told it is owned by Poles, with the connivance store opening in the old Boots building last Mad Max’s in Harbour Street Ramsgate is getting rather a lot of food shops.

Once again if you don’t have a local blog or a website with a link to this blog, this is Mr Borings post of the month and I should skip it if I were you.

The link and reciprocal link business is a vital part of the internet and the special links to Recent posts on other blogs, on the sidebar of this blog and others, that update automatically, are a key part of having a popular blog.

There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is that the search engines like this type of thing.

If you have a blog and you want to add this facility to your site, go to your blogger dashboard, click on layout, then add gadget, then blog list, once you have dragged the thing about to where you want it to appear and saved it you can add blogs and other websites that have feeds to it just by pasting in their web address and saving.

This isn’t really rocket science, if you want people to read your blog or website then you want links to it from other sites on the internet leading to your site, if you link to people then they link to you.

Static links, the conventional ones that always stay the same, like the ones further down my sidebar, are just plain boring, but the ones that update, well hot diggery dog.

Having said all of this bloggers gadget is a bit slow to update, so if you want instant updates to the local blogs that post a lot, use http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ and if you think there are other sites I should add to that site of my sidebar don’t be shy to ask me my email address is michaelchild@aol.com and if the content is either local or interesting I will certainly add it to my sidebar and don’t require a reciprocal link.

I can’t add non blogger sites to http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ as I haven’t and seem to lack the ability to write the online bit of the javascript i.e. the bit on http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/ that picks up the posts and comments form the sites, so that the javascript on http://thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ can retrieve it.

Once again I stop for a few moments to review this blog, a sort of is it all worth it type of thing, well here are the statistics for November. 8,026 Visits; 2,884 Absolute Unique Visitors; 13,772 Page Views; 1.72 Average Page Views; 00:02:45 Time on Site; 69.19% Bounce Rate; 29.64% New Visits.

I think the figures are all pretty self evident apart from bounce rate, this is the percentage of people that only look at one page.

Unfortunately I can’t unlock my blogger statistics so anyone can look at them, I should like to be able to do this as unless you publish a website, you can’t in the normal way of things get to look at a website’s statistics.

This may not sound important, but when government financed internet projects like Kent TV use their statistics to justify the amount of our money they are spending, it is useful to have something to compare with.

A Pinch and a Punch It’s the First of the Month, Thanet blog statistics and a warning about web security.

Once again the web statistics for this blog come under my scrutiny and once again my traffic sources below for those other bloggers who want to know where they come in this list.

The famous quote “lies damned lies and statistics” always comes to mind when I do this, especially because of the strange quirks, like the 6 readers that came from here to here.

Once again my apologies that I can’t make all of my statistics publicly available all of the time as they are very detailed and show trends in internet use.

One thought that comes to mind is that more people are using internet explorer 7 than 8 still, a couple of things I should point out here, the first being that using an old version of internet explorer puts you at risk from a security point of view. I would urge all of you to download the latest version and keep it up to date by doing the security updates regularly. The other thing is that a lot of websites including older versions of blogger and TDCs don’t run properly in internet explorer 8 unless you run it in compatibility mode, to do this click on the tools dropdown, top right of internet explorer and tick “display all websites in compatibility view” on the compatibility view settings.

To put this in perspective about 100 people a day visit this website with out of date browsers, all of whom are putting their security at risk to hackers every time they enter a password or their personal details on any website.

All you need to do is go to http://www.microsoft.com/ and do your updates it doesn’t cost anything.

I have just been glancing at the Thanet blogs and having been to the http://www.rarespeciesconservationcentre.org/ over the weekend I was reminded of the words from Alice in Wonderland.

I have just got back to work after the bank holiday break and will start with this one, below the web statistics for last month, for my two main blogs, these statistics are the nearest I can get to a Thanet blog popularity chart.

I haven’t bothered to explain them in detail, if any of you have difficulty understanding them please leave a comment saying what you don’t understand and I will do my best to explain.

Thanet District Council’s Protocol on Blogging

Some of you will probably have noticed if you keep an eye on http://thanetpress.blogspot.com/ or regularly delve the TDC website that back on Thursday, 18th June there was an item about blogging on the standards committee meeting see http://tdc-mg-dmz.thanet.gov.uk/Published/C00000117/M00001611/$$$Agenda.doc.htm item 11. is a Draft Protocol on Blogging, it says “Report to follow” apparently it hasn’t followed yet, however councils are not noted for their speed of action so I will let that pass.

The “Minutes of the Standards Committee18 June 2009” have just appeared at http://tdc-mg-dmz.thanet.gov.uk/Published/C00000117/M00001611/$$$Minutes.doc.htm and here is what they have to say.

“R74 Draft Protocol on Blogging
The Monitoring Officer reported that a draft protocol was with Group Leaders. The protocol would be for guidance only. If a Councillor byeline is used on a blog then the code is engaged; so advice is required to blog within the Code of Conduct. A protocol will be produced after consultation with councillors.

Miriam Sarrafan reported that Harlow LA has produced a protocol which is in the public domain.

Resolved: the Monitoring Officer would report on progress at the next meeting in September.”

Anyway following the true Thanet spirit of plagiarism I suspect when they eventually appear there will be some similarities with what Harlow Council have produced, so here is what Harlow have to say, I should warn you that the following link takes you to a pdf file that may not agree with your computer’s digestion.

“2.4.4 Blogs
Staff are reminded that blogs are governed by the provisions of this protocol as they are any other medium of communication. Consequently any communication in work time regarding the Council or an individual’s role as an officer through the blog will be regarded as being a statement to the press or general public. Also Officers must consider whether any blog updated in a private capacity (that is in an Officer’s own time) contains information that could be considered to bring the Council (including Members and colleagues) into disrepute or divulging confidential information.

Members are entitled to maintain their own blogs and are responsible for their content. Any blog that is linked to the Council website must comply with the Council’s Code of Publicity Practice and media related legislation. During the purdah period prior to normal elections these blogs will be disconnected from the Council website. However at times of by-elections such connection may be retained depending on the individuals non-engagement in the election process. The blog author is responsible for ensuring compliance and for moderating comments posted on to the blog.”

I suppose my point here is that with the Labour group saying that this is a ploy to gag Labour councillors and the Conservative group saying it isn’t, why don’t they just publish the draft protocol on the internet so everyone knows where they stand.

Once again from my weblogs the numbers of unique individual visitors that have clicked on a link on another blog to get here.

Overall this blog had 2,143 Absolute Unique Visitors in the last month and as you see the majority came from other local blogs.

Of course there are a lot of people who visited more than once and a lot of them came here directly.

Now I know that this is not an accurate reflection of the popularity of the local blogs but it’s the closest I can get, I pretty much always manage to miss someone so please let me know who I have missed.

Once again as I can’t unlock the password on my blog weblogs, but I can for my bookshop website, this link takes you to my bookshop website weblogs http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/stats/awstats.pl?month=05&year=2009&output=main&config=www.michaelsbookshop.com for those of you that are curious about weblogs, most web authors seem to be very reluctant to reveal their weblogs. One thing that always surprises me is when websites publish the number if hits they have had, as you see I got 81018 hits as this equated to 3440 unique visitors most of whom stayed for less than 30 seconds it isn’t a figure that means much.

I saw some of the bleary 83 that stayed for more than an hour in the shop, having meandered round the maze that that my websites have become over ten years, clicking obscure links that open another several hundred pictures of Thanet, or a whole local history book, curiosity gets them in the end and the come to the shop to look at the local history section.

If you have the right software the amount of work time it takes to put 100 photographs online is measured seconds not hours, so this isn’t the big deal it may seem.

This is the list of unique visitors that come here from links on other blogs which is the nearest I can get to their relative popularity I should point out that birchington.blogspot.com i.e. Thanet Life doesn’t have a live updated link on it. This is because it has been around for so long that its ancient blogger template doesn’t support them and if Simon tries to change it he is uncertain what will vanish forever.

I have put up the bookshop stats as I promised Tony in my comment click here to view them it gives some insight into a part of the internet not normally visible to people without websites. I can tell you that this blog got 2,309 Absolute Unique Visitors last month.

The web stats are mostly interesting in many ways but one if the things I found most interesting, with so many organisations quoting the number if hits their website gets what a meaningless figure this is as you can see my bookshop website got 89542 hits but this meant 5346 visits

The odd one out here is thanetlife.blogspot.com that doesn’t have a link leading here, so it doesn’t figure in the list, as far as I understand my weblogs this is unique individual visitors.

I will add bits of my normal Sunday rant to this post as the day progresses.

The picture is looking over the cliff, the shipyard is where the pavilion is now somewhat unfortunately situated, the circular thing bottom left is the railway turntable at the end of the station and line.

The blog here that really surprises me is http://www.thanetblogs.blogspot.com/ as far as I know there are very few links leading to it.

It has been a week of blogs closed for business with ECR going off to twitter at https://twitter.com/eastcliffrichar and Dave Green in a state of suspended animation at http://eastclifframsgate.blogspot.com/

There is a joke doing the bookselling rounds at the moment and here is as good a place as any; recruitment notice in a newsagents: 'Paper persons required'. Presumably if you are flesh & blood one cannot apply?



The picture below shows the designated smoking area at Westwood Cross, complete with plastic trees and heaters, I do like to see something done in the best possible taste.My main computer has just gone completely dead which means I am seriously restricted in what I can access in terms of info, so I am wrapping this up now, as the monks sometimes wrote at the bottom of medieval manuscripts; nunc scripsi totum pro Christo da mihi potum.

Sorry this post is a bit pedestrian even now trying to get children to bed and make computers work properly, anyway you may appreciate the vid
