New Isle of Thanet Gazette Website with tube and Cllr Worrow going bananas, some reflections on the use and misuse of video.

Looking at the other local blogs today, Thanet Star at http://thanetstar.com/article/temper-tantrums-at-council?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThanetStar+%28The+Thanet+Star%29 and Thanet Life at http://birchington.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/worrows-wonga-moment.html both did a post about the story The Isle of Thanet Gazette put up on their website at http://www.thanetgazette.co.uk the story about John Worrow’s behaviour at http://www.thanetgazette.co.uk/Independent-Thanet-councillor-John-Worrow-brands/story-19114035-detail/story.html relies strongly on the video that the paper published online.

After the other websites embedded it the IOTG decided to disallow sharing on the video which stopped it from working elsewhere on the internet including on their own facebook post.

The council have also published some videos of council meetings on their website at http://www.thanet.gov.uk/council_webcast.aspx another council meeting spat, this is the one where nearly all of the Conservative councillors walked out.

I will ramble on about this subject as I get time.

I am not really sure about the business of councillors throwing a wobbly and walking out of meetings, I guess we elect them to turn up at meetings and represent our views, I should point here that I last went to a meeting in about 1972 and don’t like them much, so haven’t been to any more.

Something very odd about the way the IOTG have hosted this video, and there are parallels here with the council, what the IOTG have done is host it on Brightcove video.

There is a rather unusual snag involved with doing this, and that is that it makes it impossible to credit the video to the person who published it, because Brightcove don’t let you know where the video originated from.

  1. The chances are that whoever filmed this risked getting kicked out if found out (despite the fact this should not be the case). I imagine that the video maker is being quite deliberate in hiding who they are.

  3. Thomas Brown of the Gazette perhaps. The filming position appears to be opposite the press desk. I spoke with him earlier today.

    1. Definitely the IOTG as the video is disabled everywhere apart from on their own website and there other videos are hosted in the same way.

  4. It was during the adjournment break and so there was nothing to film as Councillors simply didn't return.

  5. It puzzles me why anyone would see any advantage in attracting attention of this sort.

  6. Can anyone tell me what it was that triggered Cllr Worrow's uncouth outburst?

  8. Councillor Worrow should resign for his own well being as well as everyone else. He doesn't seem able to perform his duties and frankly seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

  9. Before the meeting, Worrow had mistakenly sat next to Gregory and then sensibly moved to the row behind. Gregory spoke about whether to allow the IOTG to record parts of the meeting on her phone. Early on in Gregory's speech Worrow raised his hand twice claiming point of order.

Worrow was eventually allowed to speak and immediately attacked Gregory over his being allowed to sit on the OSP. The video was just after his first rant. To clarify, Gregory hadnt said anything to provoke Worrow, aside from his sitting in the meeting in the first place.

Until Worrow can reconcile himself to the situation as it is with Gregory, this is going to keep happening. Its clear from the video that some Cllrs really have had enough of this.

    1. I admit, I was thinking the same because Worrow definitely entered the Chamber after Gregory. They might have been a seat apart and Worrow decided that wasn't far enough, even when he was basically behind Driver. On the phone, it was a lady. Missed the name but she was definitely from the Gazette. Thomas Brown was not there.

  10. According to John Hamilton it's all Ian Driver's fault!

  12. Anyone know what Cllr Worrow does for a living?
IF he has a job, what do his employers think of his crazy tantrums?
IF he is self employed, what do his clients think about it?

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
