Monday ramble about art, airport and stuff

We went to Canterbury yesterday mainly for me to see the exhibition of Brian Francis drawings at The Beaney, there is also the Kate MccGwire exhibition http://www.canterbury.co.uk/Beaney/whats_on/Lure.aspx which is mostly artwork made out of feathers, which isn’t my bag baby.

I went on to Chromos the big art shop in Canterbury http://www.chromosart.co.uk/ where they told me that they have stopped doing the Winsor and Newton watercolour I use. They said this was because the quality was impaired since the paint manufacturer had moved their factory to China. Frankly I didn’t believe this as I would soon know if the quality changed, so I left there a bit dazed and confused.

My guess is the Chinese have been manufacturing paint for a lot longer than the English have, the suggestion that they had been cutting down on the pigments still seems laughable.

On the art front I have had so much difficulty getting out painting that I am capitulating and going to do some Ramsgate sketches from photos. One view I particularly want to do is looking from roughly the top of the sailors church

The idea is to get the Granville Albion House harbour parade bit over on the left with the harbour filling the rest of the picture.

Condensing the view to fit on a bit of A2 paper.

I recently bought a 70s watercolour that does this and have the photos and painting arranged around a rather alarmingly blank piece of paper.

Here is a blow up of the signature, does anyone recognise the artist

I am not getting very far with my attempts to get people to consider a scaled down Manson Airport and most of those campaigning to save the airport only seem to be able to think in terms of London’s third airport, with no suggestions as to how this would be paid for, or who would use it.

There is also a “why don’t the council do something” group who don’t seem to understand that the decisions there are not really the council’s to make.

The new development near where Nero’s is growing rapidly.

My concern with this one was that they seem to have covered up arches that should have been repaired first.

Like the slipways development I didn’t object to this one, as I couldn’t really se any valid grounds.

As the page at the end of the link may vanish, here is the relevant part, KLM representative in an interview with Air Transport World 07/04/14 said:

“We can’t do business in a shaky environment. That’s not possible, not for the company, or our customers,” Kreiken said.

He ruled out a resumption of the routes, even if the airport continues operations. “Now it is game over; we will redeploy the aircraft. We are gone. We can’t flip-flop in and out all the time. That is not the way we work.”

Manston deadline extended, Isle of Thanet Gazette and Council Lease Clive Hart at daggers over council trashing community skate park, a Friday Ramble.

While on the one hand Gatwick are starting the process of getting another runway here in Thanet Unite, the trade union representing 40 staff at the airport and members of staff there who have come up with their own business plans to save the airport from closure have been granted a stay of execution.

The airport owners say that they will extend the consultation period until the end of the month and promise to give ten days notice when the close the airport.

On to the council, I never know where to start on this one, how a Labour led council could trash a community built youth facility in Cliftonville takes a bit of explaining.

Here is the link to the petition about Little Oasis Skate Park https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-little-oasis-diy-skate-park

The rumour on the street (which I think is unlikely) is that the council’s chief executive is negotiating a severance package, probably another six figure sum out of the council tax.

The council have apparently now appointed the independent expert to have a look at The Royal Sands foundations on the Pleasurama site in Ramsgate (let’s hope he looks at the structural integrity of the sea defence that hold the sand in place that the foundations sit on) and prepare the works schedule, which should lead to the termination of the development agreement with SFP Ventures.

Once that is done the council can start the process of dissolving the site leaseholds and perhaps by about summer 2016 we could get the site cleared and put to some temporary leisure and parking use while permanent site use is considered.

I think it will have to be tarmaced  over as the salt spray down there means nothing much will grow there.

On the blog comment front I am now taking a tighter line on comments, I think that while on the one hand there are obviously some commentators with mental health problems on the other hand we now seem to have developed a group of people who seem to derive pleasure form baiting these disabled people.

My take on this one is that comments where the information appears barmy and misleading get deleted out of hand as will those comments where the commentator appears to baiting someone they obviously consider to have mental health issues.

Anyway my take is that this all goes in the bin with ageist, sexist, homophobic and racist comments.

On to The Race of the Classics 2014, The Tall Ships, this will evidently not now be coming to Ramsgate tomorrow as they are sailing towards Amsterdam, see

My guess would be this is because the wind is blowing the wrong way for Ramsgate.

Needless to say I will ramble on here as I get the chance.

Dreamland planning applications

O Dreamland by zohilof
The first of the planning applications for Dreamland have appeared on the council’s planning site, you can’t link to documents on the TDC planning website, so you will need to go to the website http://www.ukplanning.com/thanet and put the planning reference into the search box there.

L/TH/14/0231 SCENIC RAILWAY, DREAMLAND, MARINE TERRACE, MARGATE, CT9 1XJ
F/TH/14/0233 DREAMLAND, MARINE TERRACE, MARGATE, CT9 1XJ
L/TH/14/0232 DREAMLAND, MARINE TERRACE, MARGATE, CT9 1XJ

I am hoping that the council are intending to turn Dreamland back into something like the Dreamland depicted in “O Dreamland” the 1953 documentary filmed at Dreamland Margate by British film director Lindsay Anderson.

Update Meridian TV have just put up a video about the progress with Dreamland here is the link http://www.itv.com/news/meridian/update/2014-04-02/dreamland-rides-again-video/

The Sovereign in Harbour Street Ramsgate is Being Goosed

The Smith and Jones pub which was bought at the end of last year by the Stonegate Pub Company after the owners the Bramwell Pub Company went bust is having a complete makeover at the moment. When it reopens next week it will change names from The Sovereign to The Goose.

My take on this one is that it is probably almost impossible to make a large pub on this site work as just a few feet away you have all the pubs, cafés, restaurants and bars with stunning views across the harbour that make up Ramsgate’s café culture.

Manston takeover offer withdrawn.

My understanding is that this information comes from a staff briefing this morning.  I will add more information as it becomes available at the moment all I have is that the consortium promoted by Sir Roger
Gale have given no reason for withdrawing their offer.

There isn’t anything on any of the news sites yet but I will add the links when and if the news becomes available.
The picture is from the book I publish about the early days of commercial flights from Manston, “Twilight of the Pistons” here is the link to it, sample pages and how to buy it online if you are interested http://www.michaelsbookshop.com/catalogue/1997_twilight_of_pistons.htm

Update; Here are the promised links to the news items:

http://www.thanetgazette.co.uk/Manston-Airport-offer-withdrawn/story-20898633-detail/story.html

The gist of all the emerging news items is:

Ann Gloag’s representative confirmed this morning (Wednesday) that the bid for the airport submitted by the consortium last Thursday afternoon has been withdrawn.

Essentially the airport closure staff consultation continues.

My own take on the airport remains that while I support a regional airport with definite future parameters on the extent of the number of flights and a reasonable understanding of both the economic benefits to the area, the noise and other pollution factors I have never been supportive of the airport running as it has recently with no environmental permit and considerable uncertainty about the extent of future activity there.

The whole business of regulating the airport with a S106 agreement rather than the normal situation, which would be a planning consent with an associated public enquiry combined with various operators failure to comply with the environment agency’s basic water pollution regulations, should have been seen as a temporary and short term measure.

Having uncertainty over the number of flights per day over Ramsgate for a long period of time has definitely had a considerable down side and I guess now the only solution is to look toward the benefits trying to be supportive of development there.

I also think that the aviation activates at Manston which hold long leases need to look towards securing a joint future particularly in terms of consolidating those parts of the site that they potentially will hold for a considerable time.

The Tall Ships in Ramsgate Harbour at the Weekend and F1 UK headquarters at Manston Airport .

Update The Tall Ships, this will evidently not now be coming to Ramsgate tomorrow as they are sailing towards Amsterdam, see
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Drace%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bclassics%26safe%3Doff%26espv%3D210%26es_sm%3D93&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=nl&u=http://www.rotc.nl/index.php/live&usg=ALkJrhgCuWCXlSBhEfwKPV4tdzqaQVUbTw
Looking at the local blogs and news websites today it isn’t always easy to work out what may be an April fools post and what could be real; or at least a rumour with some foundation.

So first the rumour, which I believe may have some foundation in truth, which is that Formula 1 have been looking for their own dedicated motor racing airport and have put in an offer for Manston Airport.

Details are sketchy at the moment and there is some doubt as to whether the airport is actually for sale as an airport or whether the intention all along was asset stripping and residential development.

The other is that wind, tide and weather being favourable the tall ships taking part in Race of the Classics should be visiting Ramsgate Harbour in the next week at the moment they are scheduled to arrive on Saturday.

Plenty of photos of previous visits just click on http://thanetonline.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Tall%20Ships scroll down and follow the links.

The F1 Manston rumour is now looking much more likely to be an April fools wind up, understandably my usual Manston Airport sources are fairly jumpy at the moment.

The Race of the Classics does seem to be on target and you can probably follow the progress of the tall ships by clicking on the link below.

Plans to turn Thanet into massive adventure theme park

Ann Gloag submits plans to turn The isle of Thanet into massive theme park, these plans include flooding parts of the Wantsum and most of Manston, buying Port Ramsgate, which will be turned into a water fun complex. Multi millionaire is also putting massive funding into The Dreamland Trust.
