New Plans for Margate Caves Site

The picture above is from the planning application for the Margate Caves site, I haven’t looked at this one in any detail, Margate not being my brief as it were, this is just a case of something I noticed when putting up last weeks planning applications on http://thanetpress.blogspot.com/ I am sure that some of the Margate bloggers will have a more detailed understanding of this planning application.
As they say a thing of beauty is a joy forever and I expect the council will be right behind this one.
The TDC planning website is one of the most bizarre websites I have ever come across in as much as the web addresses of the pages on it change after a few hours so you can’t publish links to them. If you want to look at this application you need to go to the site and enter the application reference F/TH/10/0546 in the search box, this link takes you to the site http://www.ukplanning.com/thanet

  1. I haven't a clue Michael so keep delving, this is one maybe for Margate Architecture.

I imagine the reason TDC keeps changing web addresses is to stop scrutiny, clearly some officers are helpful and some not like that scandal involving the planning department not telling local residents of changes made to the Meridian village development

  2. The original name of the Bee Gees is very appropriate for the whole of the planning department the with the director and heritage architect taking lead roles.

  3. Tony I certainly hope someone in Margate will have a close look at this thing, I have to admit to last having visited the caves about fifteen years ago, and I can’t now reconcile the plan on the planning application, the plan within the historical assessment (also part of the planning application) and Google Earth.

It would appear that they wish to infill and build over the entrance to the caves while at the same time saying that this won’t stop the caves being used as a future tourist attraction.

Here in Ramsgate we have the largest WW2 public underground air raid shelter system in the UK, as we have never managed to get this opened as a tourist attraction and the nearest comparable system is the tunnel system at Dover Castle, now open as a tourist attraction that is so popular that you have to book in advance to see it, I don’t hold out much hope for Margate Caves.

I think the problem here is that the council officers and councillors are most interested in tourism related to subjects that they don’t understand, in Margate’s case, modern art.

  4. I'm not sure how they can possibly get an entrance open from Trinity Square. I have been down there recently and the only entrance is from the land above which is subject to the planning application. There is a capped off entrance in the caves which used to lead towards the Lido but the Trinity Square aspect makes no sense at all. I cannot see how it would be feasible.

  5. Thanks for posting, Michael. But behind here on the other side of the isle. But it beggars belief.

  6. my grandad told me of an entrance from trinity sq, behind the old school i think, not sure if the entrance can be re-opened. Regardless to this fact though i don't belive they should build over the tourist entrance, once they have done this i feel they will have what they want and won't bother opening another entrance up, just more history lost forever in the persute of profit!

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
