Hi Michael, Margate Main Sands didn't get a blue flag.
ReplyDeleteMargate Main Sands got a seaside award along with Viking Bay, Broadstairs and Ramsgate Main Sands.
Thanet got 7 blue flags: Minnis Bay, West Bay, St Mildreds, Westbrook Bay, Botany Bay, Joss Bay and Stone Bay.
Thanks anon I have corrected it with info from the official blue flag website, teach me to copy info from the local media

DeleteSo why did Ramsgate and Margate miss out?
ReplyDeleteI went to a Greek island last year. One of the beaches I went to was a dump. It didn't have any facilities and the water was badly polluted; but it still had a blue flag. I just wonder if the people who award blue flags are consistent and I wonder if some of the beaches listed above are really that much better than Ramsgate sands. I know where I'd rather swim.
anon according to a Council answer from Cllr Poole we, in Ramsgate, lost out because of a 4 year old water quality test
ReplyDeleteAh http://thanetonline.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/thanet-blue-flags-some-thoughts-from.html I dont think so I have been assured that we now fly the brown flag when thta sort of thing happens
DeleteAnd you believe that, Barry?
DeleteIf this is true it invalidates the whole Blue Flag system. If they aren't using current information to rate the beaches their ratings are a load of rubbish. I think we need to put this to the organisation which awards the blue flags. I looked on the blue flag web-site and they referred me to the Keep Britain Tidy Group: lynsey.atherton@keepbritaintidy.org
DeleteLet's see if we get an answer.
Anon they really do use last years water quality results which are all published on the Environment Agency website.
DeleteSo, not 4 years old as claimed by Alan Poole?
DeleteIt was difficult understanding cllr Poole's rather shambolic ramble of an answer and I suspect there was some truth mixed up in it somewhere anon
