Ramsgate Town Council gets a town clerk from Lydd

Ramsgate council has appointed a town clerk Richard Styles, he is Lydd’s town clerk at the moment and to start with he will only be working on Fridays, as he has to work out his notice at Lydd.

This is very important as the town council has to have a town clerk to function, it is also reassuring that the council has appointed someone experienced, who I gather is keen to take the council to quality status.
I couldn’t find a picture Richard Styles so have illustrated this post with a picture of a previous Ramsgate town clerk, Blasdale Clarke, he is the one bewigged seated at the desk.
It is with some interest that I speculate, will our new town clerk wear a wig to fit in with our, so far ceremonial council?

  2. Anon 10.58, yes silly you, the town clerk is a paid official and not a councillor and if he is good at his job he could have come from Mars!

  4. Now we have a town council perhaps they will do something to ensure we still have a Sailors Church at Ramsgate Harbour, apparently a local well known publican is interested in the building and Mr Grumpy is trying the same tactics that worked with the port cafe, and trying to price the Church out with massive rental increases. "Christmas spirit an all that"

  5. 15:58 You must be joking Cllr Roger & Cllr John who are responsible for the port and harbour would not evict the Sailor's Church. The Mayor of Ramsgate is a great supporter. Is it time to start a "Save our Church Campaign" or "hands off our church"

  7. Thanks for posting this picture - I am the great granddaughter of Arthur Blasdale Clarke, the bewigged town clerk shown in the picture. Originally from Nottingham, he was previously town clerk of Bacup in Lancashire. He was shortlisted to the final 4 for the position of town clerk in Ramsgate in 1904 and was finally successful in 1906 on a salary of £450/year, aged 41. He was also a Freemason and served as clerk to various other committees in Ramsgate. He finally retired from the role in 1933 aged 66. I have a picture which I believe to be of him in his office in Albion House

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
