Ramsgate Slipways Demolition and Development 2 Days Left to Comment

There are only 2 days left to comment on this development, you can comment supporting the development or objecting to it, but you have to have sent your comments to the council before 15th October.
The pictures click on them to enlarge are all stills from the developers animated presentation, there are various options for viewing this, depending on your computers capabilities at http://thanetonline.blogspot.com/2010/10/ramsgate-slipways-development-update.html

Comments can be sent in a number of different ways, one thing is certain and that is if you don’t comment then there isn’t much point in complaining about the outcome.
There are two planning applications on the councils planning website, this link takes there http://www.ukplanning.com/thanet and you then have to enter the application reference I the search box to access them.

A word of warning though, if you have an old computer the planning sheets are large PDF files, I have published the planning sheets on the internet as much smaller files at http://www.thanetonline.com/slipways/index.htm if you find that your computer can’t open them.
The first planning application is the one to demolish part of the slipways and the boatyard buildings the reference for this is L/TH/10/0736 the second application is the one to build the new bar and restaurant complex there the reference for this is F/TH/10/0737
The first page you arrive at once you have pasted in the application number into the search box on the council’s search box and clicked on the search button has a link called “Comment on Application” this is one way of commenting.
Another is to email your comments to the council customer.services@thanet.gov.uk if you don’t get a response to your email within one business day I would assume that something has gone wrong, normally the council’s customer services are very good at acknowledging the receipt of emails.
Another way is to write your comments to the council and post it to.

Thanet District Council,
PO Box 9,
Cecil Street,
Margate,
Kent,
CT9 1XZ

If you need help producing your comments, telephone the council on 01843 577000 and ask speak to a planning officer about the development. It is important to understand that the planning officers are duty bound to be impartial, my experience is that they are also courteous and helpful.
If you follow this blog you will know that I have covered aspects of this application in various posts, clicking on this link should bring them all up http://thanetonline.blogspot.com/search/label/Ramsgate%20slipways%20development
This is an important development as it could change the café culture, inner harbour, main sands area in a fundamental way, by removing boatyard activity from this part of Ramsgate.
Bar, café, restaurant operations are always going to be more profitable than boatyard operations, they are likely to look smarter and be more sustainable because they are not subject to competition from out of the area.

If you want a drink and or a meal when you are in Ramsgate, you are not going to look for them in other parts of Europe where they may be better and or cheaper, whereas if you want your boat repaired you may and prices will be effected by the exchange rate.
There is a problem here though and that is that if Ramsgate only has food and drink to offer, then people may stop coming here for food and drink.

  1. Am I right in saying that there is a public meeting tommorow at the Custom House to discuss these applications?

    Starting at 7.00-7.30pm?

Can anyone confirm? Is it a town Council meeting?

  3. As the slipway is on a full repairing lease, does one assume that the developer will put it all shipshape and bristol fashion before he knocks it down, or have they perhaps already agreed a price with tdc. another case of being the game keeper and the poacher.

  4. Nautilus, town council meeting 7 pm today 13th October 2010, yes they are going to discuss it, sorry I didn’t find it because the town council’s website has no feeds, so short of checking it every day you don’t know what they are up to.

10.04 I am sure they will be quite impartial.

10.15 I have had assurances from TDC that the long lease the developer wants from TDC will go to asset disposal, and the change of use in the lease, from boatyard to bar, will be subject to scrutiny.

  5. Just to say that the Ramsgate Town Council voted this evening against both the proposal to demolish and to build the new slipway development.

They will now preumably lodge these objections with TDC.

The meeting was all fair and above board with one of the Councillors being asked to leave the room, following a declaration of interest.

The merits and disadvantages of the scheme were discussed in reasonable detail, a fair hearing, though some Councillors seemed more informed than others in having taken the time to study the plans and understand their full implications.

There was some ambiguity as to when members of the public were allowed to speak as this was not made clear at the start and several people complained after the vote was taken.
It was however a very poor turnout in terms of public attendees, half of which seemed to be the repesentatives of the developers.

Very refreshing to know the Councillors voted against with representatives of their landlord present. Hope they've negotiated a sound lease!

I'm afraid I'm guilting of forgetting the meeting, it was nothing to do with lack of interest.

  7. 21.06 Thanks I have checked with RTC and posted about the decision.

Friend of Ramsgate it is a pity that there is no obvious building available that the town council could buy outright.

Working on the assumption that the council is here for good it would seem to be the most economic solution.

  8. In my opinion you commit an error. Let's discuss it. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
