Here in Michael's Bookshop, where I work in Ramsgate, it's a busy day, customers who have come from up north and Europe especially for the the bookshop. Our Thanet local history books getting a particularly heavy browsing today.

Which Thanet Pub?

Another week in Michael's Bookshop where I work here in Ramsgate although now closed on days starting with T and Sundays, so not too demanding. For anyone interested in the bookshop's reopening, surprisingly to me, we are just as busy as we were before we closed. 

As bookshop enthusiasts will know we take photos of all the books we price, every working day and put them on the internet so bibliophiles don't miss anything.

3 Which Thanet pub is the charabanc parked outside Well it says on the photo The Foresters Boundary Road, however it does look wrong.

I have been spending much of the day looking up books about politics which includes a strange speed game with Amazon where the link to the cheaper copies of books vanishes after a few seconds. I guess after being open for a few months we will need to list some of the books that didn't sell in the bookshop and are too good for the 5 and 10p book sale. By listing I mean putting them on Amazon as cheaply as possible, I pay a subscription and a hefty commission to Amazon who then try to hide my listings so they can sell it more expensively.

eBay is still pretty straightforward as is abe books, putting the title and author of the book you want straight into Google is much better than it used to be. 

My purpose in doing all this looking up is to sure the books in Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate, where I work, are cheaper than similar copies of the same books on the internet.

Worstsellers and the bookshop

There is often mention of bestsellers but strangely enough you don't hear much about worstsellers however here at Michaels Bookshop in Ramsgate reducing the price of books that don't sell, often to 5 or 10p is what keeps the book stock alive. I am in the middle of doing the two worst sections, health and politics. There are even worse subjects for secondhand books, computers and law, spring to mind, but we don't stock those subjects at all.  

Mills and Boon bodice rippers always go straight out on the sale shelves at 5p 

but some of the rest of it ??

1 when do you reckon this photo was taken? obviously well before 1897 when Madeira Walk and the red brick arches by the harbour were built, looking at the tower of the Granville I think this is a very early picture taken just after the tower was built in about 1870.

2 When did it burn down and what is it called and what's happened to it now? Marine Terrace April 2003 Godden's Gap later Empire of Light stage set

3 Where in Thanet was this photo taken? Pier Yard, you can see the obelisk on the left of the picture as for the date, probably late 1950s or early 1960s

When it comes to the good old days I have very mixed feelings. I have, for instance, reservations about reintroducing the exotic dancers (strippers) in our Thanet's main seaside bars. These were the norm rather than the exception in the 1960s and 1970s.  However just at the moment, working away here in Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate, one of my jobs today is to attach little labels to edges of the wooden shelves (don't even mention chipboard bookshop shop fittings that bend or the metal ones that cut into the books). Sorry where was I, yes drawing pins. I have one box which says "1 gross of drawing pins 3/6" and another which says drawing pins 99p on it. Pins from the older box work reasonably well, however the ones I bought recently bend when you try to push them into wood.  Sorry I digress again,

We spent Sunday expanding the crime fiction section in the bookshop and purring up some headers. We are just too busy, too many customers to do this type of thing with the shop open.

This is all to do with the price of pulp fiction

Both of these pictures show fire officers from the same Thanet fire brigade, but which one? As you see above on the picture Margate. What sparked this question off was a comment on an old blog post identifying one of the fireman in the picture below here is the link to it
