Pleasurama development Ramsgate? Illustrated with some old pictures.

The main leisure site behind the main sands here in Ramsgate has a bit of a bumpy history and as I guess most of you know has been a disused mess for years.

Periodically a bit more information appears in the public domain, this time it's the Land Registry listing, for those legal eagles here it is in dark blue. For the rest of you the pictures in this post should expand to a decent size if you click away at them, I recommend clicking on the one above and giving the blue bit a miss.

End of register
Back in the day, the photo above was taken before 1860, this site was a big pile of sand held in place by a wooden sea defence with some boat builders buildings and the coastguard station on it.

In 1860 they dug a railway tunnel to the site, spread out the sand and laid the chalk from the tunnel on top of the sand. They then built a railway station on top.
When the railways were unified in the 1920s the Ramsgate Station we have now was was built and so was the railway viaduct on Margate Road. The picture above shows the Ramsgate Sands Station abandoned after this happened.

In 1929 Ramsgate Council bought the site.

1 By a Conveyance dated 28 October 1929 made between (1) The Southern
Railway Company and (2) The Mayor Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough
of Ramsgate the land in this title and other land was conveyed.

During the late 1990s the funfair was was slowly run down and asset stripped I think it closed around 97
Burning down in 1998
At around the same time the council changed the esplanade removing the through road access and most of the parking.
The council found a tenant for the site and passed plans for a huge development which stuck up above the cliff top, above is one of the pictures from the plans the passed.
 Some work was done
mostly putting in foundations resting on the sand, which may not be a very good idea
if we have a big storm and exceptionally high tide.
But I think the main issue is the cliff wall, the yellow bit is a bit jerrybuilt and doesn't seem to have foundations
the purple bit was built in 1860 part of it collapsed in the 1950s the photo above shows firemen digging through the rubble looking for and people who may have been there when it fell down.

I may ramble on a bit about this

Here at Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate a fairly busy Monday
link to pictures of the books we put out
Including some early green Penguins which I am always keen to buy.

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
