Thanet District Council, Her Majesty The Queen, the publicity and the complaint.

Despite assumptions to the contrary I very seldom make complaints or foi requests to the council. The council’s failure to publicise the recent royal visit was an exception and I think a valid one, as one of the great benefits of this visit was the extra money that would be spent in Margate by visitors from outside the area.

With the onset of winter and having visited Margate yesterday, I genuinely think that this potential extra trade could have been make or break for some businesses.

When it comes to the internet the council have taken the top spaces for “whats on in Thanet” searches, having used their resources to put their sites at the top of the list, then they have an obligation to bring home the goods.

I did what I could to get them to publicise the visit, even did a blog post about the problem see http://thanetonline.blogspot.com/2011/11/council-website-misplaces-royal-visit.html and in the end I submitted an official complaint to them, in the hope that they will do something about the dreadful way they handle their web publicity.

So below my compliant to them in blue, their response in red, my reply to their response in blue.

I wish to make an official complaint about the web publicity relating to the royal visit on 11th November.

Some details of this were posted on the council’s website homepage this week and on Friday the council issued a press with a more detailed itinerary, this press release wasn’t embargoed.

At some point on Friday the existing details of the visit were removed from the councils website homepage leaving no details of the visit on the council’s websites whatsoever.

The three council funded events/tourism sites http://www.warmingwords.org.uk/ http://www.visitthanet.co.uk/ andhttp://communityportal.thanet.gov.uk/home/ don’t mention the event at all. Visit Thanet has two conflicting events listed:

“Fri 11 Nov 2011            Margate Old Town      History Walkers MargateMargate Visitor Information Centre, The Droit House, Stone Pier, Margate, Kent            12:00   01843 223300 Fri 11 Nov 2011            Margate's Historic Shops   History Walkers Margate Margate Visitor Information Centre, The Droit House, Stone Pier, Margate, Kent            11:00   01843 223300”

The councils Facebook wall hasn’t mentioned the event http://www.facebook.com/pages/Thanet-District-Council/83700846372?sk=wall the councils Twitter account is silent about the issue, see http://twitter.com/#!/ThanetCouncil

The details of the itinerary publisher in the press release on Friday also appeared on the royal website on Friday, so this can’t be a security issue.

I should point out that the cost to the local economy, in terms of lost visitors due to the council’s failure to publicise this event, will be considerable.

Best regards Michael

Dear Mr Child

Customer Feedback Reference:31999/1908116

Thank you for your communication which was received on 07/11/2011. I do apologise for the time it has taken to respond to you.

The Queen's visit was publicised on the TDC website as soon as we were given permission by the Buckingham Palace press office to do so. Prior to this permission the information was strictly confidential.

The information was posted on thanet.gov initially to publicise the visit and was then updated to give full details of the visit. There was a short period of time between taking down the first post and posting the more detailed post which was unavoidable.

The event wasn't publicised on the Warming Words website as this is aimed specifically at literacy themed events. The details were not posted on Visit Thanet. However, it was promoted via the Visitor Information Centres.  The event was not publicised on the Community Portal as this is a portal that only the local community use. TDC provide the portal but do not post on it.

The Visit Thanet website could have posted something but this site is controlled by Tourism and not the Communication team. As a result of your enquiry I will encourage closer working between the two departments should similar high profile events occur.

The Queen's visit was successfully promoted via Twitter, Facebook, national, regional and local press. We also arranged for national, regional and local press to be present on the day and received extremely positive press from all. The visit was a great success and we have received positive feedback from the Palace staff.

We hope that this resolves the matter to your satisfaction.

If you are not happy with our response, you may write to us with your reasons within the next ten working days, requesting a further review.

In order for us to respond as efficiently as possible, please ensure that you quote the above reference number and address your communication to ******** - Business Support Officer, Business Services.

Yours sincerely

**** I will post the complaint up on the blog with your response, but without your name as I posted the complaint when I made it so some people will be looking out for the response.

As I have said before there are some serious problems with the way the council is handling publicity and press releases, much relates to faults in their basic handling of IT, as an example the councils notification of Wednesdays strike appeared on their facebook wall yesterday, Friday.

Obviously I won’t put this forward for review as it serves no purpose and only increases officer workload.

Best regards Michael

What to me in all this is the pits is that the council have now started backdating their feeds, so that although the information appears as though it was posted on the right day, it doesn’t actually appear until after the event.

The picture above is a screen shot taken just now, the red boxes around the councils feed and today’s date on my computer, as you see they actually posted the notification of their strike late, after the event.

If however you look on their facebook wall, see http://www.facebook.com/pages/Thanet-District-Council/83700846372?sk=wall you will see that the post is dated 23rd November.

A further look at their facebook posts and you will notice something really odd, the dates of the posts are not sequential.

Now I am fairly adept with ITC and I could do this and I am sure all the geeks who read this blog could explain how it was done, and may well do so.

But two questions here;

Could you do it?

If you could do it, would you continue to do it consistently after it had been pointed out to you?

As it was, with the coverage of the royal visi,t which only appeared, predated after the event and after my complaint.

Her Majesty the Queen to Meet Tracey Emin During Her Visit to Margate Tomorrow.

I wonder what they will say to each other, perhaps the queen will be adding one of Tracey Emin’s works to the royal collection.

Her Majesty The Queen and Tracey Emin Viewing Auguste Rodin’s “The Kiss” at the Turner Contemporary Margate.

I won’t be there so I have added a quick sketch of the event.

update

Media coverage of the royal visit is a bit sparse yet, the only local newspaper that seems to understand hoe to use the internet enough to link up the social networking a bit is the KM Group and this is what they have put together, the page may be a bit slow to open but has video footage and pictures of the visit http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/2011/november/11/the_queen_visits_margate.aspx

After rather letting us down with the publicity about the queen’s visit the council have finally started to tweet about it, see http://twitter.com/#!/ThanetCouncil in fact so excited have they got that they have put some pictures on Ow.ly see http://ow.ly/user/ThanetCouncil

Still nothing on their three tourism sites or their Facebook wall though.

More videos here http://www.youtube.com/user/KentOnlineVideoNews#p/u

Simon Moores has put up some high quality pictures at http://birchington.blogspot.com/2011/11/royal-remembrance-day.html

Oddly enough the Turner Contemporary, another organisation that doesn’t seem to have grasped how to use the internet to publicise events that well have been tweeting away today, see http://twitter.com/#!/TCMargate although they seem not to have mastered the visual side of this yet, so no piccies. they have also managed something on facebook see http://www.facebook.com/turnercontemporary?sk=wall

Thanet District Council, Her Majesty The Queen, Computers, 0013, Monday Morning, a Ramble.

I have just opened my bookshop and fired up the computer to receive the cryptic message, “the scheduled agent is corrupted” not an auspicious start to the week.

Could thish be double owe shirteen?

Still no mention of the royal visit on the council’s various websites, nothing on any of their three events sites, nothing on their Facebook wall, not a tweet on their Twitter. Just how much this sort of thing costs local businesses, what the cost in local jobs is, I don’t know. Say 5,000 people don’t visit Thanet on Friday who would have done if they had known about the event and say they would have each spent £50 in Thanet then that is a quarter of a million lost to the local economy.

I bunged in an official complaint, emailed the chief executive and the leader of the council asking for any comments may have about this, any replies I get I will publish, however I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I will ramble on as and when I get time, I am just putting the finishing touches to a new, old book about Birchington so that may take priority, although it rather depends how it goes.

I haven’t heard anything back from the council leader, chief executive or the council’s customer services, but they have now updated their homepage and put up the press release that they issued on Friday.

After this what the council have done gets really bizarre as their feeds (this is the way they send out information to websites and computers) have been backdated.

This is what they are feeding, in red below:

Olympic torch comes to Thanet

04 November 2011, 16:26:54
Thanet District Council is pleased to announce that Thanet is to host the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay on 19 July 2012.

Enforcement action success

03 November 2011, 14:47:54
The owners of a derelict property in Margate have been ordered by the courts to carry out work to bring it back to a good level of repair.

Queen's visit details

03 November 2011, 12:18:40
Margate Old Town and the Turner Contemporary are to be included on the route that The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will be taking on their historic visit to Margate on Friday 11 November.

Dreamland statement of case

03 November 2011, 11:59:55
A "compelling case" to compulsorily purchase the Dreamland site and turn it into "a new and viable heritage Amusement Park" has been set out by Thanet District Council.

I only really picked this problem up because the Olympic torch news was part of a national news embargo time of midnight last night / this morning and I noticed that when the feed appeared on this blog and Thanet life it was time stamped 04 November 2011, 16:26:54.

I think this may the key to the reason why so much the council releases doesn’t feed properly, doesn’t for instance appear on their Facebook wall or the blog sidebars that rely on feed technology.

I think the problem revolves around backdating their feeds, so that with the royal visit a press release is listed as being added on the 3rd of November when it was actually added on the 7th, after say the Olympic story that was added earlier on the 7th but dated the 4th.

Council website misplaces royal visit.

I don’t know if this some sort of equivalent of a queen sacrifice in chess but the boffins at TDCIT seem to have lost the queen from the council’s homepage.

The royal visit announcement was there, and the council issued a press release today see http://thanetpress.blogspot.com/2011/11/margate-old-town-to-greet-queen.html the press release didn’t have an embargo on it, so why it hasn’t appeared is a bit of a mystery.

Why the notification of the royal visit has vanished from the council’s homepage is a bit of a mystery, this leaves the councils homepage top event the coffee morning and plant sale. This event is on tomorrow so it should vanish at midnight, part of the Alice in Wonderland feature in TDCIT is that events featured on their homepage vanish at the beginning of the day they are actually on.

The councils Facebook wall is leading with the night flights application, see http://www.facebook.com/pages/Thanet-District-Council/83700846372?sk=wall they last tweeted the Margate football club proposals.

Perhaps the council are engaged in low treason, their other website, Visit Thanet doesn’t mention the royal visit but does say.

“Fri 11 Nov 2011            Margate Old Town      History Walkers Margate
Margate Visitor Information Centre, The Droit House, Stone Pier, Margate, Kent            12:00   01843 223300
Fri 11 Nov 2011            Margate's Historic Shops   History Walkers Margate
Margate Visitor Information Centre, The Droit House, Stone Pier, Margate, Kent            11:00   01843 223300”

Perhaps the history walkers will walk into her majesty.

Turner Contemporary to close for royal visit

The gallery has just announced that it will be closed all day on Friday 11th November.

No news is good news. Apart from perhaps the royal visit to Margate.

The Kent Messenger Group has pulled out of the deal to buy up The Thanet Times and The Isle of Thanet Gazette.

I am not sure if this is good news or bad news, I suppose this realty relies on their ability to survive what are interesting times in the word of business.

I haven’t had either of the free papers that the two companies produce this week, this means that I have looked at the stories they have produced on their websites instead.

Two stories caught my attention, one being that The Charles Dickens pub in Broadstairs has closed http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/Sudden-shutdowns-leave-Broadstairs-pub-staff-cold/story-13655641-detail/story.html and the other being that the council are going to stop monitoring their CCTV between 3am an 9am http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-15458905

I think the problem here is a fundamental one, which is as technology advances how does anyone get paid for writing anything?

Sorry the picture isn’t very good, should have used different paints, but I hope it shows my confusion over this problem.

The blue I mean, something out of a travelling art palette I have sorted this out now and can put a squirt of cobalt blue straight from pocket to palette and produce a fairly even wash anywhere.
I will ramble on I expect

Sorry I digress, of course the main news item is that the queen and the duke of Edinburgh are to visit Margate next month, see http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/2011/october/26/her_majesty_visits_margate.aspx once again I find I don’t know what to say.

In view of my recent problems with trying to find out what events are going to be on, I wonder if the council will announce the royal visit on their website.
